I don't think so. The issues started when Verizon released the update. Everyone that has been having the problem is saying that it happened after this particular update. I think a few people went back to 2.3.3 and weren't having the same issue, Talk worked just fine.
I asked this earlier, maybe not in this thread, but what is the difference between the G+ Messenger and Google Talk? I know Messenger doesn't have a 'who's online' list but like Talk does but isn't it pretty much the same thing otherwise? I know I can send messages to phone numbers and e-mail addresses with Messenger.

Verizon has been the only one to release the .57 update to the R800x, while there are other users for the R800x that aren't verizon, their service provider has not released the .57 update

If I am correct, it determines the stability of the connection. When white you wont receive notifications.
