You comment on battery life

Hello everyone.

I am new to the forum and also to the android world. 3 day ago I switched my iPhone 4 for a GS3. I really love the phone and the os and kicking my self for ever using iTune lol.

My only problem is I find the battery goes down pretty quickly when I use the phone. I read a lot of problem while on standby but my phone seems to be ok on standby, it is rally when I use it that I find the battery life short.

I do 2 hours of train per day so I use my phone a lot on the web (LTE network). While using it I would say the battery goes down 1% every 5 minutes. That is reading the news, being on facebook and stuff like that. I did some change to improve battery life like lowering the brightness, removing useless widget and only synching my work exchange and my gmail account.

I would like to know what other GS3 user have as far of battery life while using their phone on a cell network.

thank you

i use Tasker to automate a lot of things for me.

for example, i setup a profile to detect when i'm at work, to then shut down LTE/data, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, and silent the phone. and to automatically kick all of those back on when i'm off work.

i also use it to turn of LTE/data when i'm connected to a Wi-Fi network, and to turn back on if not connected to Wi-Fi.

don't use Auto Brightness, over in the Tasker sub-section, there's a profile tutorial how to make a pretty good auto brightness replacement.

all-in-all, try not use LTE if you want to get the most out of your battery. this is probably the biggest battery killer.

There is a very long thread on the AndroidCentral.com forum about 4G/LTE causing extreme battery drain. So much so that the phone actually gets warm.

There is a temporary work around that prevents the phone from using LTE for data and stays on just 4G. Here is a cut and paste from the thread on how to create the LTE on/off capability on your phone. This fix is for an AT&T phone only... but search the forums for "APN" and you will find entries that talk about creating alternate APNs for your phone.

I saw a post on XDA about this. You can't disable LTE, but what you can do, is add an APN specifically for HSPA+ and select it.

Go to Settings, More Settings, scroll down to Mobile Networks, click Access Point Names, press Menu and click New APN and then add this,

Name: No LTE
APN: wap.cingular

then go back in and make sure this is the selected APN and it should drop you from LTE and only connect to HSPA+ (4G)

This fix worked for me. You can turn LTE back on by going back into settings and checking the factory default APN. When Samsung fixes this problem you can just stay on the default APN. No Harm done to your phone.

My battery is by far and away the worst thing about my S3. My phone was on my desk yesterday at work and not touched once, everything turned off and when I picked it up after 12 hours I had 50% battery remaining with zero screen on time. It was in a bad signal area but even so, 50% battery usage on 12 hour standby is ridiculous!

I am with Rogers and we have the option to turn off LTE in the stock OS. I am trying it today and will check if it is better. But so far it seems like it's pretty much the same, but my pages are taking longuer to load.

no I don't, I turn it on when the battery get low and I don't have acces to charging it.

Turn it on. Unless you are gaming and need full resources all the time, think of it as your performance switch on your car, usual one runs on econ but when they want to get a bit wild they toss it on performance. My battery even with lte, unless I am using it heavily lasts a day easy, it doesn't do 2 days but it isn't a 4 cylinder either, it's a full on v8.

It clocks the processor down so it isn't running at full speed all the time.

Also make sure that you either exit out of apps fully by pushing the back key when leaving a app or close them occasionally. You can switch between apps by pushing the home key and the push remove all or swipe the app closed.

But the bigger one would be the power saving switch turn that on

Also no task manager is needed, android and Samsung have that handled.
