There is a new video player for android called Rock Player that plays most file formats without conversion. I tested it on an avi file and played smoothly at 24 fps. Its in beta therefore not in the marketplace. I do have the apk. Pm me for it or google it

Just tested this program, it seems to work VERY well. Played a few AVI/Divx movies on it, very smooth. Audio seems to go a bit wonky every once in a while, but I couldn't really tell for sure (Might have just been background noise around me making it sound odd). The interface is very simple, but totally functional.

All in all, very very nice solution for playing AVI's!

Oh yea, it was getting 20-24 frames per second, according to the little counter in the upper right corner. Sounds low, but it looked fine to me. Course I heard somewhere recently that DVD's are encoded at 24FPS... If that's true, then it makes sense that this program would play at 24 FPS.

Oh, and seach for "RockPlayerBase" to find more info on Google. "Rock Player Base" doesn't come up with anything.

I've been getting about 28FPS & pretty smooth! Thought I'd share!:D

"We all know of Android's video codec limitations (i.e., no AVI or MKV support). Many Android players promising AVI playback have been, to put it lightly, disappointments. Over the past few weeks, however, there has been much buzz surrounding Android's newest video player, RockPlayer, that reportedly plays AVI and MKV files without a hiccup. However, up until today, the beta for RockPlayer had been private, and the versions floating around were not authorized by the developer (i.e., warez).

Today, this has all changed! I am pleased to announce that the developer, "Water.E" has released RockPlayer Beta to the public! I personally have been using RockPlayer for sometime now, and have been impressed by the app's exceptional playback. For example, while displaying an AVI file full-screen, I get a fluid 24fps playback, with minimal audio sync issues and relatively no skipping. In my opinion, RockPlayer is the best video player for Android. Also note, RockPlayer is also equipped to play the standard Android video format, MP4, as well. "

I've been using Rockplayer for about a week now and this thing is amazing! the fact that it is able to play .avi without converting it to mp4 saves alot of time. the picture quality is good as well.

The video is generally pretty nice. It has a few distortions. The audio is having problems with the MKV's that I have tried. The app is awesome for a beta and it will only improve.

It's not perfect, but it's better than anything anyone else has done on the platform thus far. I can't wait till they get hardware acceleration working, and subtitles.

All of my DVDRips/Xvid porn plays GREAT!

Always really nice to have high quality porn on the go in your pocket! Never know when you might need some porn.

downloaded the on the MU mirror and tried to install with AppInstaller. Tried twice with the same result "application not installed"...??

I have another version of this player and it warns my that it will replace that one but then I get the error.

what next?

Wow! Much improved over the original "leaked" version on xda "Rockplayerbase" demo ... mp4 playback is on par with the stock player and avi picture quality is better!
