I was getting 1.8 - 3.3 down and .8 - .95 up until the last couple days.

This is my 2nd EVO and I just put a full body skin on it so I'd hate to have to exchange again!

I live at william cannon and beckett and usually get around 2 Mbps down and .75Mbps up. I work out towards dripping springs on 290 just past sawyer ranch rd and outside the office I only get a 3g signal. Inside I'm roaming on verizon. I was at a coworkers house this evening in circle c just off 45 around the golf course and I got no signal at all.

Okay, so I decided to root last night to see what would happen. I flashed Fresh EVO 0.5.3 and the rooting process sent me back to the 4.26 radio which I'll keep for a while because I haven't had much luck with the 5.31 with this EVO or the last. PRL reverted to 60662 and I'll keep it there until I have a better understanding of it.

I took screenshots on the way to work today and it seems more acceptable 4G speeds are back BUT as I feared, my 4G signal was in/out the whole time so I had to watch the notification bar before running speed test each time (and there were several failures along the way). So this isn't optimal either...I guess I'll soon try some of the few "4G fixes" out there but I never had much luck with those on my first EVO. Why can't I have my cake and eat it too?

Here are some results from Mueller at 51st and I35 area. It was hard to find a perfect 4G signal but I got one a few times on my walk to Jamba Juice. I also included a 3G result as a comparison. The 3G upload speed was double the 4G upload speed. I noticed when 4G was on, if I had all 4 arc bars showing, my speeds were upto 1mb faster, as seen above.

Can anyone comment on the 4g strength on and around UT? I'll be a freshman there next year. Also, how's 4g in NW Austin, off of Mopac and Far West (I think?)?

I will be on the feeder road just south of Far West and MoPac at noon today so I will try to remember to do a test.

For those of you posting numbers/locations, please post your phone info. For example, mine:

Rooted with toast's method (1 & 2).
ROM: Fresh EVO 0.5.3
Radio: 1.36.00.04.02
PRL: 60662
Software: 1.32.651.6
Build: 0003 (Epson)
Etc....

<edit> I just found hardware version 0003, firmware version 2.1update1, PRL 60667, software# 1.32.651.6

First picture is from the intersection of Far West and MoPac. Second one is about 1/4 mile south of Far West on the MoPac feeder road behind some buildings.

Got ~6Mbps in my car at Parmer and McNeil, Cedar Park is pretty good as well.

WTF?!?!?!? Seriously???

I was at the Shell Gas Station at Parmer and Mcneil today to gas up my car and ran three speed tests and didn't break 2Mbps. I've never broken 4Mbps on 4G since launch with 2 different EVOs.

Are you 100% stock? Did you take the update this week? Tell me about your phone please...

I'm really not hung up on speed as I may seem. If I could just get 2Mbps consistently instead of constantly dropping in and out of 4G coverage I'd be a happy camper. My coworker has an iPhone 3GS and consistently gets 2.2-2.5Mbps over 3G...

At MOPAC and Bee Caves:
225 down & 284 up with 3g (4 bars)
583 down and 419 up with 4g (4 bars)

In Anderson Mill , close to 183 and Lake Creek:
456 down & 480 up with 3g (2 bars)
2491 down and 614 up with 4g (2 bars)

I was off of 183 & Braker and I got 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up. I live in Cedar Park (Parmer & Brushy Creek) and I get 2MBps down and 700 down. I have had some good luck with my 4G signal on my EVO and I'm running stock. I will do some tests tomorrow while I'm out and about.

I got 4G at Brodie/Slaughter just a bit ago. Was able to get 2.5Mbps down while on a phone call. Not too shabby. :D

First i would like to say that I LOVE my Evo, and it is by far the best 3G phone i have ever had!

But...

I have been playing with the 4G that is currently running here in Nashville, and have noticed some things.

1. the speed is all over the place, i have pulled everything from 6.5Mbps down 1Mb up to 530K down and 200K up. it is so variant that i have noticed that sling player (the desktop version via Android WiFi tether) runs better on 3G then it does on 4G. I can run a speed test and get a pretty reliable 4Mbps down, and then on 3g Get about 700K down, and even with that sling player will still run better (reports higher bit-rate) on 3G... :(

2. Building penetration... I know that WiMax runs at 2.5Ghz and there will be more degradation then 3G, but going into a building where i have full bars of 4G and then dropping down to no bars (but still have signal), when i only loose 2 bars of 3G is a bit ridiculous...

3. Range - I Know that Nashville is nowhere close to being fully deployed, but the towers seem to be highly directional. i can be literally standing below one and get one bar, i move 50 ft out and i get full signal, move about 500 ft more and be down to 2 bars.

My theory is that maybe they are ruining the towers at a lower power then normal until the city gets officially lit, but then again looking at the clear maps i begin to wonder if this is just the norm for WiMax...

Can anyone in a fully deployed city confirm or deny weather this is still the case?

The only one I can really speak to is number 3. The spot directly under the antenna is the dead spot because it doesn't really broadcast directly down. Or so I have read

Off of Dessau and Howard no 4g signal in the house. 3 bars with clear. Anyone confirm whos towers they are using for 4g; Clear or Sprints?

Gulch area has had 4G since launch. Got ~5 mbps down on launch day, though I just went to Chicago and their 4G in downtown is ridiculously fast...hopefully ours will become like that. Now I'm in LA and they have nothing!
