Official 4G/WiMAX Coverage Areas

I'm in Fullerton and just now picked up 3 Bars of 4G. Sorry no pic.

2575 kbps down/ 982 kbps up

Not very fast but still faster than my crappy ATT DSL. Ping is too high though at 332.

I'm just down the street from devildoc on Euclid/Orangethorpe.

I turned on 4G last night and to my surprise I received coverage. Tried it again this morning and I still have 4G coverage. Could be tests they are doing.

Hello everyone. First post here.

I just had some questions about my 4G speeds in Austin.
I live at the intersection of Lamar and Parmer, and I am literally in the middle of thee towers - each no farther than a few thousand feet from my door, yet my signal strength drops out to as low as 2-3 kbps....and that's several times a day too, whether i am in my apartment or on the sidewalk. My low for the day is usually around 10-15 kbps.

This is not all the time though, since I have actually seen speeds of almost 3Mbps even with my apartment at my desk. These short bursts of speed usually last around 10 - 12 minutes, and then plummet down to 250- 300 kbps or slower.

What i found strange is that when I ran several tests near two of these towers, I couldn't break 3Mbps.

At one of the three towers surrounding where i live, I ran a series of 3 tests and came up with less than 2 Mbps, even though I was within two hundred yards of the tower( s )
( There are actually two small towers side by side near Westview Middle Schools football field. )

I took back my first Evo, thinking something was wrong with the phone, but now my replacement Evo gives the same results.

I have seen short bursts of speeds of over 4+ Mbps with an average of no lower than 2.5 Mbps on my phone while in the parking lot of the Parmer / I-35 H.E.B. , but I ran a series 12 tests on the same tower from the North and West side of the tower and couldn't break 3 Mbps. ( Avg. of around 1.7 Mbps )
This was done within 200 yards of the tower in an open field on a clear day.

Just curious if this sort of signal variation is normal, or if there is something screwwy with the towers ?

One more thing I found odd is that despite having full bars and two rings, i see around 600 kbps on 4G. Other times i can have two bars and no rings with speeds of over 2Mbps.

Do the strength bars and rings really mean anything, or is there some other factor that varies the strength ?

I hope I don't come off as whining about any of this. I mainly curious :)

Thanks everyone !

I forgot to mention : I'm using a EVO 4G.
As far as updates and such, I'm currently updating, so we'll see if Frodo 2.2 will help any.

Update : Well I just did a test with 2.2 and first results gave a reading of 0.03 Mbps .... however
I just got 4G signal.

My first reading 5.27 Mbps !

Signal fluctuates between 1.25 - over 3.5 Mbps on 4G now, but still really drops once 3G kicks in .

If you think Frodo helped you should consult with Gandalf too!

Sorry, couldn't help it. A few things to remember:

1) 4G is spotty. That’s just the way it is right now.
2) Due to the frequency, 4G does not penetrate structures very well.
3) The popular speedtest app can be unreliable.

I flashed Fresh EVO 3.1.x, the new radio and wimax last night so I now have a FroYo set up as well. My eyes popped out of my head with morning as I grabbed 8.8 Mbps down & 1 Mbps up at 183 & 290. That download speed is double my record (EVO owner since launch). So there is definitely a difference with FroYo! I just wish shootme was working so I could post my record...not sure if it doesn't work with FroYo, the Fresh ROM or what...
Now I just can’t wait for CM6 to get 4G…

Hey, I live in Santa Ana and have not picked up a 4G Signal is most of the city. I also drive around Garden Grove, Westminster, Costa Mesa and HB a lot and still have not picked any 4G signal. I was in Irvine today (around UCI) and again no 4G signal. Guess I'll just have to be patient.

I work there.

I find that if I'm outside I could get three bars on 4-G if I stay in one spot but if I move I would get one bar. Inside the building where I work I would get none.

I experience pretty much the same when im in the downtown area. Outside decent connection, inside not so great if at all.

Nope, nothing in the Apopka area. Heck, it would nice to get more than 1 or 2 bars in the house. Sprint needs to get a few more towers in this and the Zellwood area.

That's really fast !
Strange as it may seem, my download speeds seem the same indoors.
I tested the Evo outdoors today with the tower in plain sight and got an average of around 2 Mbps.
Twenty minutes before that, I was in my apartment and got my highest reading yet - a short burst of 6.2 Mbps.
I noticed the bars again seemed to have nothing to do with the readings. The 6.2 reading was with three bars and no ring, while the 1.5 - 2.5 outdoor readings showed all bars and one ring.
Strange

I notice the story linked on here says Tampa, Orlando, & Daytona Beach, but there is no mention of the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area. Did they scrap adding 4G there or is it already up and running? I live in Ft Myers, and from what sprint says, its going to be closer to the end of the year before 4G is even thought about here, so It seems like central FL is my only option for 4G in florida.

Man.. by the time 4G coverage is anything decent here in Florida, I'll already be moved to Charlotte, NC! 4G coverage is awesome there from what I've been told!

I'm on 4G right now....I get it here in San Pedro and have been for weeks now....posted this quite a few weeks ago. Steady signal mostly around the lunch hour each day at least...I'm not constantly on the phone. I'll check tonight to see if I have then too...maybe learn to post those speed graphs other people post here.

Bone stock Evo...not one mod on it.

LOL...I've been reporting about getting 4G signal outside of my work (Hollywood), since Day 1 (June 4 release).

Nice I'm also getting 4g from Malvern and Gilbert to brookhurst and Orangethorpe in Fullerton. Didn't really drive anywhere else. getting about 4+mbps with Speedtest App.
