Samsung May Be Looking At Some Trouble

You're not too familiar with apple's tendency to quench competition then :p

By any means necessary.

Apple's PR department does a great job of making itself look great.

Now with 100 billion dollars in cash on hand you'd think they could afford bringing some of those jobs here to america instead of factories in China where the workers have huge suicide numbers.

Yeah, no kidding!!

I'll try to explain this as simple as possible and no offense anyone!

China has like "close" to 2 billion people. US & Canada combined (let's leave Mexico aside) have like 350M??? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Simply put, NA's are lazy bums and not enough work force. Foxconn has the money and power to hire 50M workers whenever. The reason why they overwork is to provide even more money to their families. Nobody makes them work overtime and sleep there to be productive and NA's seem to be either stupid or ignorant or both when it comes to understanding that the minimum wage in China converted to dollars does NOT equal 5 or 8 per hour.

I wouldn't worry about this issue...I'd worry more about the regular Chinese getting richer. They're numerous and they love Apple. Think, compare the facts before you act. Nuff said.

It may sound simplistic, but I honestly don't know why people are so upset about this ruling (other than this is an Android forum, of course). If we're all honest, it's fairly clear that Samsung copied elements of iOS, particularly relating to the touchscreen and therefore need to be punished for it.

If you were an illustrator or photographer, and someone used part of one of your works in one of their designs, I'm fairly sure that we'd all have something to say about it. Copyright laws are there for a reason - to protect all of us in whatever we do and I don't see why company A should stand by and watch company B using technology that has been patented by company A.

Surely, it's Samsung that's at fault here - not Apple.

To be fair, Samsung did copy a lot of things. Was it worth $1billion? Probably not. This is bad in the short term, good in the long term- this will force Android to really step on it in terms of innovation, rather to copy things, to seek out new designs, uses for the smartphone. This ruling basically says Apple has a monopoly on these patents. But monopolies get lazy and the innovation dries up. And another upstart creates something better.

Is it a coincidence that Samsung's smartphone's suddenly started to sell loads since the release of the iPhone in 2007? No.

They try and copy as much as they can, just look at TouchWiz UI on the original Galaxy S. Why change Android's default UI so it looks like iOS. Maybe Samsung will add some new unique features instead of just waiting for Apple to add them to the iPhone and then copy them.

What does that have to do with the S3? You think Apple will come to you and take it as part of the payment?

If anyone asks, I think Samsung's support can only be better now and their devices too, as they have to earn the money for this lawsuit. Unbelievable that they would allow a jury to decide in technical matters, a joke.

Whenever I read about samsung phones looking like iphones, I look at my Galaxy S3 with a puzzled expression on my face and think "what the hell are they talking about?" It doesn't look anything like an iphone

Nah it's cool, I'm only looking at the ones some of my colleagues have. I did ask them if it was an iphone :o  . To be fair, some themes & launchers can have similar icons too.

Sued HTC, too - over features that HTC always had - but they didn't sue until last year (when they plans to copy HTC Sense features).

Why all of the suits?

You mentioned the Mac, let's look at that.

When the Mac was introduced in the 80s, it was kicking butt. Microsoft made their first fortune with Applesoft on the Apple][+ and were making money on the Mac.

Then they fired Steve Jobs and started producing the crappier 90s Mac.

Then he returned in the dot com days and brought the company back to life with the new Macs and OS X (great operating system) - but he couldn't overcome the damage wrought by the interim management, even with the best OS.

Napster happened, the mass market discovered mp3 music and players, and from that came the iPod and then the iPhone.

As of the last year, Apple has had more cash than Exxon (no joke), smartphones are outselling PCs and the world is turning to cell phones for their internet.

Apple makes hardware and software that locks you in to their hardware.

Apple got their cash in mobile devices, not Macs, and this last year, Android has been handing them their head on a stick.

They know what happened the last time they were bucks up and on top and lost market share. Despite having more money than anyone, they are suing to survive because they are out of markets.

As for the SGS3 on Metro - hope you get it, but newer models are just around the corner and they are still selling the SGS2. The SGS3 isn't going to die, no matter what. It might change form - and it might not.

The other thing is they cant go after Google Directly since there both based in California and Google has a stiller reputation for being a great company to work for. I wonder how much the fact Apple is based In California influenced the jury trial. Cali easily has one of the weakest economy around and Apple is a huge company. I wonder if the jury was perhaps persuaded to rule in Apple's favor for the simple fact there is a chance there could be repercussions to the state.

Personally I think the only way we can get a fair trial on something like this is to have it held in Europe. The very least a state that does not have a vested interest in one of the company's.

As far as what happens next I really think Samsung should stop selling to Apple that simple. I think company's in General need to stop supporting Apple. When there is a bully on the play ground the best way to handle it is to unite when its 25-30 vs 1 its not so much fun to flex that muscle push people around.

Yes I am very passionate about this subject and its not I hate Apple (I guess it could be said at this point I do). Its the fact Apple is pretty much the definition of a rotten company. They bully they lie they cheat and they steal what they want.

I will stop now I think I already had one thread deleted I started (could have been so tired last night when I wrote it I forgot to push create).

Posted this in another thread and thought people might be interested in it here. This seems to be the main place to discuss this issue. I quoted what I was answering to and my post that way it was in context and didn't sound funky at the start.

Good points and I can't help but agree with the observation about monopolies. The iPhone was impressive once upon a time. It is now behind the curve in terms of hardware and iOS has remained virtually the same for years (yes, Apple has thrown in worthless junk like Facetime and Siri, but nothing meaningful has happened to iOS since 4.0 was released over two years ago). My iPhone 4S is probably the last Apple product I'll buy (I assuming I can convince my company to go with something better next time). Android is innovating while Apple appears to be pouring more energy into lawsuits than keeping up with what consumers want.

The entire lawsuit in a nutshell is "does apple own the rights to a rectangle style device with buttons on the front" the answer is according to the courts yes.

This pretty much means Apple has the right to go after ever single tablet and cell phone manufacture out there. There not going to do this thought instead there going to attack large companys they know will settle out of court.

You mentioned Monopolies last time I checked those are illegal in fact Microsoft been to court over them.

United States v. Microsoft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I guess I am kinda confused why its ok for one company to have a Monopoly and another cant.

I always thought that lawsuit was a farce. I am remotely sure that there was no evil meeting with the objective, "How can we control the internet browser world? It pays so well for a free product." I think it was more of a, "Hey lets make this easier on people!"

It's sad that a company lacks innovation claims to have invented everything. Isn't that right Xerox vs Apple? Apple Computer, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apple's favorite tool has always been the courtroom. Samsung is whipping them in the marketplace with superior products like the S3, so this is a natural reaction for them. Funny the spy photos of the iphone 5 look a lot like Samsung Android products. Also funny that these stupid lawsuits have been laughed out of courtrooms around the world and now suddenly Apple wins in a courtroom in their home state/country.

This makes me less likely than ever to buy an Apple product.

The international (and some US carrier variants) of the Galaxy S1 looked similar. The GS2 also looked somewhat similar. They decided to go with the nature theme on the GS3, which Apple doesn't, so it's not something they can sue on.

I also merged a few threads together that were discussing the same topic. Sorry for any confusion.

It's interesting that they went with a nature theme because I wrote about this idea back in 2008!
https://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum/the_natural_os
"If you look at all the other OS's, they are all competing on how shiny and cool they are. They all rely on mimicking artificial substances. Metal, glass, and plastic. Competing with them is a losing battle because you'll just look like a copy of Mac or linux theme. What I would like to see is something based on natural and organic materials. For example, compare reading something on white paper vs the solid white screen you are looking at right now. Paper is a lot easier on the eye and one of the reasons is that if you look real closely, you'll see that it is not pure white but it has complex texture.
I would also like to see icons that look like they were painted with real paint instead of over stylized clip art with no real soul."

They do add useful features but Apple didn't sue them for copying useful features. They sued them for rounded rectangles and similar phone icons.

How are NA's lazy bums? The issues you just described are what workers here in the U.S. went through at the turn of the 19th century before any labor laws were enacted. Low pay, unsafe work conditions, people living in corporate towns in which the company charged you for (ever heard of Pullman or read any Upton Sinclair?).

China for the past 15 or so years is going through what most of the west went through over hundred years ago. A lot of Chinese have become very wealthy because of this situation. But considering how large the population is, and due to it's government most Chinese are never going to know the standard of living we in the west now enjoy.

Three of the biggest tech companies on the planet are based here in the U.S., and just because big companies in the west choose to have their products made in China simply because it's cheaper to produce and don't have have to worry about unions, health care, pensions, matching 401k contributions doesn't make NA's lazy bums. A lot of towns around the U.S. and Canada have been devastated because companies chose to move their production to China because of the cheap labor.

Fact: 81% of smartphone shipments in the last quarter in China were Android. Hardly loving Apple...

Think, check the facts before you post.

Amen. Bear in mind that Apple would likely be charging as much for their stuff if it was made in the U.S. They've just figured out how to exploit cheap labor and increase their profits.

This is not the kind of behavior we should rationalize.
