Help Severe battery drain (Yes i have done a factory reset)

Avelina

Lurker
Hi guys

After the last firmware update my phone drains battery like there is no tomorrow. I charge it fully right before bedtime. Put the phone on my nightstand and when i wake up it's out of battery and have turned itself off

I have tried uninstalling all my apps, but nothing seems to work, as mentioned in the headline I have also done a factory reset.

The battery indicator shows that screen has used 78% of the battery, but the screen has been off all night and there is only a few short blips of awake time during the night (probably when I have received sms)

I have also tried searching the forums for a solution but I am running out of ideas. Anyone have any tips or tricks?

Hmm, well that did not work. Went to bed with full battery, woke up to a dead phone :(
@GTWalling: Well i could, and I kind of have to, but that does not solve my problem, the battery drain is even faster during the day since then I am actually using it. I would love not having to charge my phone 3 times during a 24 hour period... It was just fine before the update :/

Mine was doing that too. Tracked it down to an app that I updated. I didn't want to reset the phone so I just started to uninstall apps that were updated until I found the culprit. Good luck

Install GSam battery monitor! You should be able to pinpoint the problem there. All though the fact that the phone battery monitor points to the display as the culprit is odd.

FWIW, I've noticed this lately with some of the kernel wakelocks - basically, because they can cause your CPU to run in the background, and because the battery monitor doesn't seem to care if your CPU runs at 384 or 1384, they don't show up. GSaM and Better Battery Stats do a slightly better job of finding them.

From this morning

GSaM should allow you to drill down into System and show you what processes are using that battery.

Not sure I'd disable it, as it has some great features. Maybe you just want to limit the number of items that it syncs. Should be able to find those by opening Google Now and hitting the menu button.

I have not listened to or watched anything today, and my phone is on vibrate. The alarm woke me this morning, and remains the only sound or image that has been accessed today. It is a stock ringtone.

*edit*
I'm using an At&t Galaxy S3 on Jellybean 4.1.1 that was downloaded from Keis. No root or mods to the handset.

I am down about 25% after 6 hours. According to Gsam, the display is 23% of that and Apps 70%. Of the app usage, the 2 highest are Android System (16%) and Kernel (Android OS 13%). After that are apps I have used, so that makes sense.

Any way to reduce these.

Had JB updated and did a factory reset when I got the phone this weekend so I don't have any previous JB history to compare to.

Are you down 25% or down to 25%? Because losing 25% in 6 hours with light to moderate use doesn't sound to bad to me.

what is your data usage? is it high?

Not really. Looks like ~12 MB over a 4 hour period in the usage details. Battery is now at 64%, with Kernel (Android OS) at 14.4% and Android system at 8.1% of the 46% used. I've used no apps, save Gsam and Gosms Pro. I've not checked email, or recieved any calls, and have not accessed any music or video. I've literally sent one, and recieved three messages, and read the usage info in Gsam. And I've lost 46% of my original charge.

Agreed, my battery drain is enormous. I haven't done loaded the battery analysis apps yet, but I'm assuming I'll find something similar. Also wondering if you have seen big battering drain for apps that use the Accesibility services to run (LightFlow, Locker Pro, etc...)

Wipe battery stats

Err no.

How could wiping a stat like "screen 78%" possibly resolve this issue?!

There is a massive misconception that wiping battery stats somehow makes android calibrate the battery and see its "true capacity" but take it from me, this is a complete fallacy.

Wiping battery stats does exactly what it says. It wipes all the stats that make up the breakdown of what has used battery. It does not affect the overall reported battery % at all. It will not help reclaim missing battery. In fact, on every charge, battery stats are wiped anyway.
