Root [Virgin Mobile] Boy am I screwed

Okay that part is done opened and pressed yes

OK, so to check root status, there is an app in the Play Store called Root Checker, if you download it and run it you can confirm whether or not you are rooted. I also need to get to bed, so this is probably a good place to stop for now; we can get you up and running on CM11 later, I am just glad that your phone is back in working order for now!

Struckn I know I was probably a pain in the butt not knowing much about this stuff but your step by step directions was awesome and now I have a rooted phone. The best thing is too that other people can follow this step by step process so your work will go on and on. Thank you again someone newly ROOTED. :D

It isn't a problem, trust me! It is enjoyable to see someone start to "get it" in the world of root. As usual, off to work in a little bit here, but if you want to get some KitKat up and running (if you haven't already done so!) then I will be available again late tonight.

Ready when ever you are. Plus I have a question can you save a rooted rom like the one I have now?

All right, home and ready to go. Are you referring to making a backup with your ROM question? When you make a backup in recovery, it should save the ROM "as is," so whatever state your OS is in at the time of making the backup. And you should definitely have a backup of stock on your SD card at all times, you never know when you might need it.

So whatever you have running right now, when you boot into recovery, prior to doing any wiping and flashing of a new ROM, you will want to make a Nandroid backup first. This actually should be Standard Operating Procedure from here on out-whenever you make a significant change, either changing ROM's altogether or dirty flashing a new nightly of your current ROM, always make a backup first so that if something goes sideways, you can fix it quickly by restoring your backup. So which ROM are you wanting to flash tonight? CM11 or Carbon; I would assume you downloaded the version of CM11 I uploaded. You will also need GApps ready to go and the most recent APN fix from @MopedRyder. I know you already have a GApps package, but I personally do recommend the Paranoid Android GApps from here:

[GAPPS][4.4.x/4.3.x] OFFICIAL 0-Day PA-GOOGLE APPS (All ROM's) [2014-02-17] - xda-developers

And this is the thread with the APN fixes:

Finally, here is the link for the latest flashable zip for the most current Philz Touch recovery:

Goo.im Downloads - Browsing d2lte

Put all these zip files (ROM, GApps, APN fix, and latest Philz Touch) into a folder on your SD card and name the folder something you will recognize when you are in recovery.

Download this copy:

Carbon KitKat Nightly 20140209 Asserts Removed.zip | by struckn for Galaxy S 3_Sprint

All I have done to this one is removed the asserts so that it will flash properly, that way you can choose which apps to delete later on if need be (I always do a debloat of the one I use personally, but like to give people options!). This is one of the best builds from d2spr Carbon, just prior to the switch to the universal d2lte builds, which have been a little buggy.

Okay all are saved and on my card

Boot into recovery with volume up, home key and volume after powering off the phone. Make sure you hold it long enough, don't let go until you see the blue script in the top left corner. Then choose Backup and Restore, and then Backup to storage/sdcard1 to make a backup of your current OS which will be saved to your SD card (sdcard1). This will take more than a few minutes, as the file size for a TW ROM is quite large. When the backup is finished, let me know.

It says generating md5 sum but isnt doing anything this normal when saving? To SD card?

It says can not open pa gapps stock 4.4.2-20140217

Did you download the latest Philz as well? If so, flash it, then choose Power Menu, then Reboot Recovery, which will reboot you into the newest version of Philz that you just flashed. Then retry flashing the GApps. I assume you flashed the ROM successfully and had moved ahead to flashing the GApps package? It has to be done in sequence.
