Too many other local casinos are taking the business away

I think that is happening nationwide, with so many native american casinos popping up every everywhere you look. The customers of the mega-casinos that rely on travelers, like AC, Vegas and Laughlin, now have a place to lose money right down the road. And to me at least, it also seems that the novelty of 'gaming' is wearing off, especially in these meager times.

Vegas still has some entertainment and enough of a reputation to still pull visitors. AC has nothing but the casinos and the events there are dwindling down to has-been entertainers or 3rd level sporting events. Very little draw for anyone that has to drive more than an hour or two. Plus, the beaches are a mess and the town is completely run down ... even before Sandy. Now?

I never gamble with money. I might toss in a buck or two to an office pool when the lottery hits $100 million+ or drop a passing quarter in a slot, but i get nothing from it. I really don't understand gambling, i guess.

I don't think I could ever live in a casino town.

BTW, do we need to change the thread title to "Do you like where you gamble?" ;)

Must be nice... all four casinos in CA I've been in reeked of stale cigarette smoke.
The first casino I ever went to was Morongo, which is off the 10 freeway on the way to Palm Springs. It runs ads ALL THE TIME, and it looks wonderful. Yeah, well...the smoke was so thick in there you'd need a machete to cut through it. Their "non-smoking room" was a small, pathetic room with an awful selection of older slot machines, no staff at all, and smoke POURING into it through the ventilation system--which it shared with the main part of the casino. I only lasted about an hour and we had to leave. I had to use my rescue inhaler. It was miserable.

In contrast, as I've mentioned, Pechanga is wonderful. There's an entire side of the casino that's non-smoking, and it has all the same new, fancy slot machines as the rest of the casino, plus it's heavily staffed and everything. There's no difference between it and the smoking part except for the smoke! :)

For those who don't know, and may be wondering why smoking is even allowed in casinos here, since California is the non-smoking section of the US and everything, it's this: They're on Indian land. The Native Americans are not bound by California law on their tribal land, so they can allow smoking or not, it's up to them.

I never gamble... never have any spare cash to throw away like that.
I'd never been to a casino in my life...until I moved back home to CA and my mom got me hooked. :D But I know it's not a good option for some people.

Well, I do throw $5 in the pot when the guys in the shop go for that big lotto... only because it would really suck to come into work to find I am the only guy left 'cause the rest of the gang are now millionaires.

And I also find it interesting to see what it's like for people from all walks of life what their surroundings are. I may want to pay that certain place in particular a visit one day. And a local can describe it better than anyone else.

Wow, that's some resume! You've literally been all over the map, in some of the coldest places and hottest places, east coast and west coast, and in between. Impressive. :)

One never knows what these vast InterWebs may do! :D

As for move-itis, for me, as I've said, I'm done. It took years for me to end up back where I started from, back where I always wanted and intended to be, and I just can't imagine ANYTHING--short of California falling into the Pacific ocean --that will make me move again.

Holland, much rain between the days <3 i like winter weather.
Really good study companies here and schools, education is really good.
And in my town is it very relaxed.
I've always wanted to visit Holland. One of my childhood best friends was from Holland, and I learned a lot about it from her and her parents.

What about you ?
Go back and read through this thread!! I've written a LOT about it. :D

Impressive.

Actually, although some of the places worked out quite well, I didn't have a compelling reason for choosing any of them, including the current one. I thought I had reasons then, but now it looks more like I was throwing darts at a map, blindfolded. Then again, I suppose all that has rounded me out in some odd way.

I'm sure it has. It fits in with my "everything happens for a reason" thinking, so even if it appears random, like throwing darts blindfolded, I doubt that it actually was random or that no lessons were learned, etc.

As for me, I had what I thought of as compelling reasons for each relocation around the US, and I don't regret any of them. Well, okay...I guess I do regret, to a degree, the one that lasted eons...and was never supposed to last eons. The people I met and lessons I learned are priceless, so it's hard to regret it, you know? But on the other hand, I can't pretend I didn't lose years living somewhere I really didn't want to be. :hmmmm:

After living near Chicago, then near New York City, then near Milwaukee, then near San Fran, then near LA, then near Seattle, now near Phoenix... it sure is hard to be for a particular baseball team, especially a bad one like the one I'm near now.

I'm considering moving to Michigan with my parents. It will be an all new place, new college, new job everything. But there I will have more freedom, and less complaining from my Grandma...

That could be tough, huh? Is there a particular team you feel any affinity or loyalty to?

Although I don't really care much about baseball, I love basketball, and I'm a lifelong, die-hard Lakers fan. I bleed purple and gold.  So I never had the problem of not knowing which NBA team to root for, because it's just always been the Lakers.

especially a bad one like the one I'm near now.
Then pick a different one!
