What if iphones stayed small screen??

if Steve Jobs were alive today.. and still running apple.
would the iPhone still have created the iPhone 6 and plus? larger screens?
He was very vocal about not going over 4.5 inches.

if iPhone 6 had stayed under 5inchs. I think they would have lost more market share to android.
what are your thoughts?

They're still down to 15% worldwide.

The only places that iPhones matter is in the United States and Mike's China, where people still suffer from phone envy like it matters.

It's not like they're worth more.

Jobs would have done a better job marketing the larger screens and no one would have cared about the change in position.

Jobs often reversed position without trouble, he had the charisma to pull it off.

The day is coming when an iPhone will be shipped running Android. Soon.

so.. you are thinking the apple reality-distortion-field is still strong.
and it would be stronger and better with Jobs.

Absolutely on both counts.

Last week I read some Apple press claptrap about how now that Android has copied iOS features with the debut of Lollipop, we can finally get a single-gesture access to our music player controls and it isn't it nice that we're finally getting decent features.

Android adopting iOS features? Finally we get some functionality?

There's proof that the RDF is alive and well.

Long before the iPhone had that feature, you added it with an app in Android - I did with QuickDesk back since Froyo - maybe even Eclair.

The concept of the user experience not being just one thing, dictated by the corporate overlords, is still a completely foreign concept to the Apple faithful. If it ain't built-in, it don't exist, and apps can't fundamentally change the overall UI/UX - that's their mantra.

And no one sold it better than Jobs.

We're talking about a phone that uses an unorganized app drawer for its launcher and the equivalent of a one button mouse for control.

This is why my response to all things iPhone is always - Oh my God, who the hell cares.

And not to derail your thread, but as a service to those interested in QuickDesk, here it is running tied to a long press on my search button.

Back on-topic - do I think that they'd have lost more market share without the bigger screens?

Yes. :)

there seems to be a lot of people that care...
apple is still making plenty of $$$$

it just bugs me so much...

how they talked bad about huge phones.. and here they are.. only a 1 yr later!!!

since the first EVO 4.3 inch phone.. I was a fan of getting bigger screens.

Yeah and the press had a field day with their huge earnings and how it was tied to their iPhone sales.

Except doing the math was trivial for anyone who bothered - to come from device sales they would have had to have netted over $850 per device.

Which - they obviously did not.

More money than Exxon. They're not making it selling iPhones.

Wow. That bothers you?

What about notifications being a joke, something that they would never do?

The faithful simply rationalize that by the time Apple does something, they do it better.

You better learn to live with disappointment.

When iPhones start running Android your head is going to explode if screen size is still bugging you.

Remember how everyone laughed at us for having giant Evos?

Wow does Xi Jinping know about this? If we don't hear from Mike soon can we assume he has been ousted and longer in charge?

betting on Mike...there goes your credibility .... :p

iPhone running android.. from apple.
that would be ... when apple is way down. they aint letting go of their walled garden anytime soon.

that would not be anytime soon. not less than 5 yrs.

Apple didn't become an economic power house by being stupid.

They changed their name from Apple Computer when it became obvious that their little music store idea had merit. Remember, once upon a time, no one expected that to make anywhere near a brick and mortar.

With over 80% of the world on Android, you're looking at a huge, inaccessible market for iTunes media sales.

Apple gets that and said last year that they were looking into iTunes for Android.

That becoming a reality is going to be sooner than we think - unless they choose to be as stupid as BlackBerry who didn't release their Messenger for Android until years after everyone stopped caring. (Apologies to the six or seven of you still using it.)

They're running out of areas to capitulate on - once iTunes for Android hits, you can be sure that several test versions of Android on an iPhone will have been cycled through their R&D - beyond what they've already done.

Not going to take five years or anything like it.

iTunes on android.. sure. that is a no brainer.. 80% market that they need to tap into.

but once you have android on iPhone. that is a flood gate for the sheep to look at other manufactures.

apple will fight tooth and nails .. till almost the last pint of blood..
to hang on to the hardware and walled garden.
they never let it go in the PC vs Mac fight.

with the last sign of life in IOS.. they will then look at android and or Windows or what ever flavor is popular.. to go on iPhone. maybe even all OSs

That flows both ways.

Some people are so wrapped up in what Apple does they just can't stop paying attention to them.

Every one here in denial with phone envy will come back and tell me, "I didn't think I'd ever buy an iPhone, but now that it has Android, wow, it's the bestest Android evar! I am surprised!"

They'd have to make it so that it has the guts to run a preemptive multitasking Android and not act like a 2012 phone but even if they didn't, they'd sell by the bushel.

Anyway, Apple sells a lot of phones, Dan. But it's not their money maker, it's just their hardware money maker.

Tell me Dan - wouldn't you buy an iPhone running Android? :)

no it is not the big money maker.. but it is one of the major ways they make money.

NO.. I would not buy and iPhone.. I really like the back button and home button.
i also HATE how apple ethics in business. so i aint giving them my few $ that i have.

:)

The one button puck mouse was a Steve Jobs thing, then Macs got sensible, multi-button mice while he was still alive.
th

Xi Jinping is a piker in a nice suit.

The smart money is on Mike. :)

Xi Jinping probably gets his suits from Savile Row, London, and is still very much head honcho. He's been trying to drive out extravagance, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, lux brand whoring, and has locked a few former Communist Party big-wigs in prison for corruption.

But then the iPhone 6 is still a $1,000 luxury item here, and highly coveted. In the UK, can buy iPhones pretty much anywhere for a reasonable price, like from cheap supermarket MVNOs, there's no exclusivity. It just doesn't have the same perceived cachet and prestige as it does here. So it's like every chav and its dog seems to have one. :D

If I had $1k, I'd send it to you so you could buy one.

You could enjoy the luxury of a phone with a one button mouse for a control.

Android on iPhone? I don't see that happening. Methinks the Early one is having some fun. 75 million iPhones sold last quarter, I think they're probably ok with that. Open up iTunes, maybe even extract a licensing fee, possibly, but wouldn't that take away a big reason for people to buy iPhones? The bigger screens are definitely a big reason the new ones are selling so well, if Jobs were still around he would have had to have caved, probably make it seem like he planned it all along. Maybe even file a lawsuit for good measure lol.

Nope, I'm serious.

Look at the revenue wrapup - http://phandroid.com/2015/01/28/apple-q1-2015-results/

And the profits - http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/01/27Apple-Reports-Record-First-Quarter-Results.html

Yes, they made a lot of money on the iPhones and sold a lot of them.

$75 billion in revenue - but like every other year - the next quarter the bubble will pop and they're looking at $55 billion, tops. That's going to keep up until next year.

Meanwhile, despite being a huge handset maker - they're continuing to lose market share.

Look at the success they've had with the last two years of iOS changes and this year with the long overdue size changes.

That's just flat copying Android and we all know it.

So if copying Android some gives them revenue spikes, what would happen if they copied Android a lot, as in all the way?

And look at the revenue. It's not coming from hardware sales and it's expensive to fart around with iOS to sell iron.

iTunes for Android - coming.

Android on iPhone - coming right after that.

so.. from what I can see.. it proves that..

Jobs is the a master liar.

also .. since the apple store brings in so much money.
how can they give that up... going with android?
