Official 4G/WiMAX Coverage Areas

I posted on the Sprint forum, but I wanted to post a couple of my questions here in hopes some more knowledgeable people can answer. I want you to know too, that some of my questions have to do with coverage, so that you don't think i'm off topic (I'm trying to be respectful of where I post in relation to the thread topic :)).

Story is... I have been looking into the EVO on the sprint network and am thinking it would be smarter for my family to be on the sprint network because the data is included with the plan, whereas I believe, verizon you have to pay $30 for each device.

Now if we were to switch, would our plan be $149.99 with this discount? That is because the first 2 devices are included and the next 2 devices are $19.99 each. Just clarifying my thought process..

Some of the questions I hope someone could answer or at least point me in the right direction (forum/post/webpage).

1. Unfortunately we don't have 4G in my area and probably won't within the first year, so it will be a 3G phone for us. I thought I read that with 3G you have a 5gb cap on data if used as a hotspot, but data is unlimited otherwise.. right??

2. Switching carriers we will have different coverage, but from what I have read Sprint can roam on Verizon. Do we pay a rate to roam? How does the coverage compare (since Sprint can roam WITH Verizon)?

3. Could someone tell me, hopefully from experience, how switching carriers was for you? One point might be (look at 1) how has coverage been since switching? Or customer service (this is definately a selling point for me)?

Keep in mind that I am not the account holder for my family plan, but I feel it would be better financially and well more advantageous (EVO is a great phone with a lot of capabilities) for us to switch. Two of our devices already have data plans and the other 2 are looking to get a data plan.

I am just looking for some helpful information into the whole subject I guess you could say and I would appreciate some knowledge from some knowledgeable people to further my decision for switching carriers. :D

I apologize for the long post...

1) I have regularly gone over the 5GB, not tethering. It pretty much just shows up as data. I think the consensus is that they can give you crap if they want but they typically won't within reason. I've done 10-20gb in a month once :)

2) Sprint roams for free on Verizon. Typically the down side is that your data roaming will be slower. You won't lose connection but you will likely be stuck on 2G data. It comes in handy since Verizon has better coverage in some rural areas. Cities tend to be fully covered.

3) I ported my girlfriend over to Sprint last summer and got us on a $129.99 family plan. It was simple and they did it for us in the store. She kept her number. Now we split 1500 weekday landline minutes and get nights, weekends, cell phones, data, text, and navigation for free.

As mentioned in the other thread. NYC is also live and active. Been on 4G all morning. And this at work, near Jamaica/JFK/Hillcrest area of NYC.

Wouldn't Wash D.C be listed under Maryland? Or should there be another category like Other Districts.
This may take care of both Wash DC and any Puerto Rico listings if they come on board.

Good idea TS, was a little confused as what to categorize DC. Made a Districts/Territories section.

@mocumber, are Rochester and Syracuse live or under development?

What device are you using? I am in Astoria working and I want to test my Overdrive. But I have a 3g data plan and just spoke to Sprint and they wont change me to a 4G plan until its officially announced.

So my overdrive is still saying no 4g signal.

Anyone know when the WIMAX DC deployment is scheduled. I've seen the press release's that say 2010, but have not heard any more update.

DC metro area will be "officially" launched in three weeks or less. More cities in VA and MD have been added..

Any idea when NYC will be "officially" launched? The guy at BB when I preordered said October, but TwoSpirits got a signal near Jamaica. Maybe they were just testing out in Long Island?

Since dc and baltimore are so close, wont this mean it will be a huge coverage area connecting the two cities and areas between?

Hmmmm...there are two towers within a few miles me, including one within a quarter mile. Hopefully this means Sprint 4G and Clear Wimax internet available to me by the end of the year.

Here's to hoping. :)

Keep hoping. I live between two Clear towers in north Dallas, right in the middle of the good areas on the maps. Had CLEAR for several months. Unusable service because I live in a "low" area. Still looks good on the maps. Still can almost see the towers from here. But I finally gave up and sent the equipment back. Unusable. I certainly hope 4g is usable on the highways, since I have a long commute every single day!!

Good luck with yours.;)

do you know which cities in md? rockville or bethesda maybe, 20852 or 20814 zip?

also, with the overdrive device is there a way to manually select 3g or 4g, or does it auto switch between them?

Those cities should b included since its still in the dc metro area

Has anybody heard anything about Indianapolis? Every city around me seems to have 4G coming, St Louis, Cincinnati, Chicago... but no Indy.

last year i bought the U300 3g/4G modem. Sprint refused to sell it to me because my zip code was not allowing them to do so.
Workaround...
But I explained to them that I'm a business traveler (big lie) and need it for Baltimore (at the time the only city up with 4G), so they special ordered it for me. Then when I upgraded to the U301 this past Oct, I got the same run around and game them the same excuse.

Although I am paying for the 4G service every month and only travel on occasion to cities like Las Vegas, Baltimore and Hawaii, I still feel it was worth having just in case. Both in LAS and HNL the service was top notch.

This morning I tested it due to what eieio said about NY being soft launched. and Yes I got a signal, only 2 bars mind you but still faster than the 3g at a full 5 bars.
It did take a while to connect though, but not much of a difference than when i was connecting in Hawaii or las Vegas back in Nov and Feb.
It could very well be in the testing phases, cause I did get dropped off once this morning.
I will see what it is at home, cause there is a verizon tower a block and a half away from my house. But can't tell if it has a wimax tower on it.
