Did anyone catch the exchange between Lewis and Nico after the race - the cap throwing incident? Hilarious I thought, obviously heated emotions from the race, which I thought was one of the best of the season.

Been an F1 fan for the last decade or so and enjoyed parts of this year, but really starting to go off it.

Last 2 races were snoozefests, the politics around car development and tires are actively killing any excitement in the sport and Bernie is an obnoxious, corrupt little troll who needs to leave the sport the hell alone asap.

I don't begrudge Mercedes their current dominance at all, and the Nico-Lewis rivalry is about the only thing that keeps me watching. However, all the bans on development and in-season testing have for me neutered the sport. There's no chance for great development teams to improve a huge amount over the length of the season anymore, leading to greats like Mclaren being utterly dire. All the bans & limits were supposed to foster more mid-tier teams and have if anything driven them out the sport as well as alienating engine and tire manufacturers.

TLDR: F1 was and occasionally awesome, but the current rules etc are murdering it slowly imo.
 
I agree, and the dire performance of Mclaren is shocking. The rules are obviously too restrictive so they need to be changed.

Well done to Lewis on becoming world champion.
 
I'm watching the 1996 Japanese Grand Prix. Seems so much more exciting than today's almost sterile races. Interesting that the technology in the cars was a lot less, just pure racing with very little driver aids. In some ways I think the technology involved in modern cars has made things less exciting.
Also I notice no white line on the pit lane exit.
And wow, amazingly the wheel just came off Jacques Villeneuve's car and flew over the fence into the crowd!!
 
Formula 1 is here!!!!! Who watched today's race? What are your thoughts? I can't stop thinking about Alonso's crash. Prayers for Alonso
 
Following Bernie's plan to move all Formula 1 live racing to Sky (in the UK) in a couple of years time... I'm officially retiring from watching/reading/following/spending any time or money on formula 1 any more (sorry Silverstone but I'm not going back)

Its a shame, as I remember watching when Nigel won his first championship... but if thats what they think of the fans, then i'm out of here. It was fun whilst it lasted, but now its over!

Really? Oh man that is another nail in the coffin of my TV licence. I mean what top flight sport do we have to watch now on the terrestrial channels?
Yes I get nostalgic about the good old days when F1 was a whole lot more exciting than it is today. As usual with any sport, money ruins it.

I absolutely refuse to pay for Sky, and if it wasn't for CBeebies, then I'd be ripping out the aerial and my TV would be used exclusively for watching Blu-rays and video gaming!

That was one of the most terrifying crashes I think I've ever seen in F1

What a great race at Monaco today. Makes a change from the usual parade of cars.
Ricciardo must be absolutely gutted he lost the race on a pit lane disaster.

Haha! I think that the driver in an F1 car these days is largely irrelevant, so we're halfway down the path of auto-driving racing cars anyway.
I say, dispense with all the gadgets, DRS (what a joke!) etc, and go back to making it a true test of driver skill. But then, that's not what F1 is about is it?
 
I've changed my opinion on the above. I think it's not unreasonable that a F1 driver be required to learn how to change the settings on the car. I mean given that it is part of their job, and the astronomical amounts of money they get paid.

It's all about big money in F1 any way, right?
He'll get the chance to prove himself, next season. Even if they chance the rules and minimum age has to be 18 after Max' entry this season, because he will be 18 by then.
And he'll be driving for William's. So... :) Where's the harm? He may give us some good laughs :)
 
I'm sure he's got the talent. But there are a multitude of kids out there who are really quick, and could easily earn that seat. The fact he has pots of money makes him so much more attractive to teams.
But yeah, let's see what happens, it can't hurt to throw some new blood into the mix.
 
I think all F1 races should be in the wet. Give the track a pre-race compulsory soaking, then let the drivers have at it.

One thing is clear though from yesterday's race - Max Verstappen is a loony. He's got balls, but an absolute loony. Love it!
 
Rosberg announces retirement, aged 31, after winning the world championship.

What I'd like to see now is Mercedes taking Verstappen. Him vs Hamilton would be a contest worth watching.
 
And so the new season starts.
I do hope that Ferrari can remain competitive with Mercedes, in the hope of providing us with at least some interesting racing. We'll see.
Another thing that interests me is the struggle at Mclaren-Honda. This great team is having a lot of problems with their engine. I wonder if the team has the resources to develop their own engine?
