Is there a way to link the email icon on home page to google mail, or must I always go to applications to get to it?

My new Captivate is plugged in, charging, for the first time. The instructions said to charge it before turning it on. It's been charging for several hours, and there is no indicator of status. I've read about the alert, but does it work when the phone is off? Will I know when it's fully...
