I believe Mobile Odin requires Root. Anytime you root a phone, it installs the SuperUser app that allows you to grant certain apps SuperUser access, without it, you can't perform certain functions. Clockwork is kind of the same way. It will run but because it doesn't have SuperUser access, it will fail when trying to perform the functions you are looking for.
I have seen people who are having USB issues solve them by cleaning the USB connection on the phone with rubbing alcohol. Have you tried that? I assume you can charge your phone via USB?
