Root Wifi tether does not work

I have a Htc Evo 4g running 2.2 android and it is rooted. Wifi tether shows up as a network, but it doesn't work? I have no service on the phone, do I need service? Also when I do get service, it's going to be cricket, will wifi tethering work?
