Manual network selection problem

Please help!!
Im a regular visiter to Cyprus and sometimes drive near the Northen side and mybphone aut connects to their network. I recieve the welcome to Turkey msg and switch my phone to airplane mode. For the next couple of days i recieve msgs saying Ive spend X amount on internet sometimes reaching £20.
I have spoken to my 3 mobile network provider and they told me to switch to manual network selection.
I tried this on my last trip to Cyprus and when i went near the North it connected again.
Can someone please advise me on how to stop this??
Many thanks

Of course Turkey isn't in the EU, so it doesn't come under the European Union data roaming regulations. Depending on whatever phone it is, you should find manual network selection in Settings, Networks, somewhere. But without knowing what phone you've actually got, make and model, we probably can't tell you any more

Thanks for the reply. Its a LG k8 phone.
As i said ive tried manual selection, but im not sure how it should work.
Should i have no network coverage And be asked if i want to connect when it picks up the Turkey network?

That should do it, and that's how manual network selection is supposed to work. And I don't know why it would automatically connect to the Turkish carrier network, if it is set to manual.

To avoid excessive non-EU international data roaming charges completely, make sure international data roaming is turn off
