I'd also look at restricting background data, and/or using Data Saver to reduce your mobile data usage.

Background data is data that apps use while you're not actually using that app, like auto checking for new email when you're not in your email app. You can disable all background data - Settings > Data Usage > Menu > Restrict Background Data. (might vary slightly by phone)

Or on most phones you can disable background data on an app by app basis:
1. Go to your phones Settings menu.
2. Tap Data Usage
3. Scroll down to the app and tap it.
4. Scroll down and tap to check Restrict Background Data.

Data Saver was introduced in Android 7.0 Nougat. When turned on and you’re connected to mobile data it limits background apps you are not using, they can only use a small amount of data. So it's similar to Restrict Background Data but lets apps use minimal data like receiving emails but doesn't allow 300MB updates.

Turn Data Saver on or off:
Got to Settings
Tap Data usage.
Tap on Data saver and tap the slider on or off.
(again, location might vary slightly by phone)
