A head-scratcher

Compassion is cool!
This is sheer curiosity, not something that needs attention.

This old thread shows two different members as 'thread starter.' Of course I thought perhaps two separate threads had been merged.

But look at its #1 and #2 posts. They're from the same date, though no time is shown, and from different members. They're the two posts marked 'thread starter.'

It's clear from reading #2 that it's a reply to #1; it is not the same issue posted as a question in a different thread, which then got merged.

So, how can two people be one thread's OP? If I had to bet, my money would go on it somehow having to do with both inactive members' label of 'guest.'

I think it is because they are both "guests" meaning they never registered. It's probably a fluke caused by AF's custom code.
But they have usernames. They must have registered.

Remember when we had the 'anonymous' method of asking a question? Those posts show the username as 'Android guest' or 'Android question' or something (sorry, I haven't paid much attention when I've come across them, but they're clearly, obviously from our 'anonymous' days). So that's not it.

The later iterations let a user type in a name that would appear and the byline / status / whatever would show "guest"

Ah-ha! I don't recall that, so it may have been during my hiatus...or just senility firmly taking hold. :D

Okay, so those accounts you described, they can show up as 'thread starter' in a thread they didn't start. My old...old, UNIX brain is trying to reconcile this with unique user ID numbers, like root's being 0, and how they could choose a display name... Oh! Were those one-off names? That were really all the same account/user ID, or something like that?

As noted, this is purely curiosity on my part. @Unforgiven, I appreciate your taking the time to play 'WTF?' with me, when I know you have more important things to do. :D

That user also posted in device forums, which requires you to register an account:
https://androidforums.com/threads/cant-get-rid-of-alarm-icon-in-status-bar.974851/
https://androidforums.com/threads/wireless-connect-galaxy-tab-to-pc-and-external-harddrive.749555/
https://androidforums.com/threads/help-cant-login-to-google-play.896974/
https://androidforums.com/threads/how-to-remove-a-custom-rom.996522/

The user who replied probably requested their account be deleted. Since the OP either never registered, or also asked for their account to be deleted, they both show as Guest.

And as you both mentioned above, something in the site code causes them to be listed as OP.

See here for deleted accounts showing as Guest:
https://androidforums.com/threads/admins-delete-account.1306526/
(now deleted accounts also have their name removed, back then they didn't)

Not worried.

That happened 4 years ago.

How very observant of you!! Sounded like she was not worried either, as that wasn't the point. But hey, I get it ;)

So that is what it looks like when a user is deleted, or that is what it used to look like. We do it different now. But, in the old delete account thread, before I started making the deleted users have unique names, they all showed as 'thread starter' as well. It has to do with forum identifying the users as the same due to the state of their account. So yes, it looks odd but just one of those weird quirks of the forums.
