Slow in operation

My device is slow to load and change websites, even though a speed check shows it should be almost as fast as my PC. Checking online, It was suggested that I look at something like the Google launcher instead of the standard Samsung one.

I downloaded it and clicked on the icon. A message came up indicating that the default launcher is Touchwhiz Home and that I should go to settings, tap clear defaults, then hit Home.

The problem with that is that the app page for the Touchwhiz has the clear defaults tab greyed out and there's a note saying no defaults selected. If I go back to the Google app, I get into the same routine. What am I doing wrong?

The simplest way to change launcher is usually to just install a new one and press the home button. The device will then ask you which launcher you wish to use. If you do it a second time it will offer that one as the first choice, and as whether "just once" or "every time". Select the latter and the default is changed.

Network speed checks don't tell you how responsive the device is, just how fast it can swallow data on an internet connection. If web page loading is your problem I'd have thought that different browsers would be the first thing to try. Give Naked Browser a spin: that is a tiny, no frills browser, and if you still struggle with speed with that then you know that the problem isn't the browser. If that solves that problem but isn't to your taste try a few others (Brave is almost as fast, at least on my phone, while Firefox is the slowest one I have installed but I keep it because I like some of the features).

A launcher may help with general UI responsiveness, but should make no difference once the browser is loaded (unless it's a real resource hog). I use Nova on all of my devices anyway, so can't remember how the Samsung Touchwiz launcher performs on my old Note 10.1 tablet (I ditched it because it was so inflexible, so have no real feelings about its performance).

The blurb associated with the app suggested it should work as you describe, but it doesn't, or I wouldn't be asking the question. I tried resetting by holding the on/off button till it switched off. I deleted the new app and reinstalled it, all with the same result. So that's an issue I don't appear to be able to resolve.

I'll check out the browser you suggest and see how it compares to Chrome, which is what I use at the moment, because it handles bookmarks well.

Not allowing it to set a default is odd. Try installing a different launcher, in case it's a problem with the Google launcher you installed. If that isn't recognised as being able to handle the "home button" intent then you'd get this behaviour: the system doesn't set a default action if you only have one app installed that can handle that intent, so there wouldn't be a default to clear if for some reason the other launcher wasn't working properly in this respect.

That's all I can think of.
 
Thanks once again, Hadron. I uninstalled the Google launcher and picked Smart Launcher from the list. It worked as intended this time. I'll see how it goes over the next day or so and report back. I did also have a look at Naked Browser but I was, as you indicated, a bit basic.

Thanks for the reminder (or no thanks, as it happens!). I must not have actioned the install correctly as, when I checked to confirm I was using Smart Launcher as default, I wasn't. I found the app, opened it and, elementary mistake, clicked on"make default".

It works OK as far as internet access is concerned (main use) but it's a very simplistic interface and a lot of the installed apps are invisible, so would prefer to go back to the standard Galaxy launcher. The bad news is that the interface is so simple that I can't find a "Settings" button or any other means of accessing the list of apps. I'm still looking, but appear to be in a "Catch 22" situation, in that I can't preform a reset either because I can't find the Settings button!

I'll report back.
 
Panic over! One of the few buttons on the home page is for "Folders" and was empty. I hit the + and it opened up the full list of apps with the option to tick-to-see, which I did for main apps used. This loaded them into the Folder button but there doesn't seem to be a way of dragging them individually on to the home screen.

Now I know I can revert to the original, I'll see how it goes for a while. I've set a reminder this time.
 
Thanks for the update. Bought a 2019 Galaxy Tab A and I'm finding that it runs much slower than expected so I'm thinking if I could free up some of the ram by limiting what loads it might help.
