Help Steps to transfer all data from old phone to new phone without losing any data?

I am a bit paranoid transferring from old android phone (samsung galaxy S4) to new android phone (samsung note 8) that I will lose data/history/messages after I have removed the sim card from the old phone and put it into the new phone.

I want everything in my old phone to appear in my new phone. I am a noob, the last time I did a transfer process was 5 years ago (samsung galaxy S4).

Is there anything I should be aware of? (I do not want any data to be accidentally disappear/deleted.)

What are the apps that once you login in the new phone, the old messages/history will automatically appear?

I think contact list will automatically appear once I login to google account. I think I would need to backup sms messages, whatsapp messages and restore them in the new phone.

If you have any bad experiences, data loss, while transferring from old phone to a new phone, do share your experience.

Most manufacturers have a data transfer app to help with this (I expect Samsung's Smart Switch in your case). So the first thing to try is just using that (plus swapping the SD card).

Contacts are automatic as long as they are all synced with an account (Google, Samsung, Outlook, etc) and you set up the same account on the new phone. If anything doesn't get transferred in that first step above then you'll need to manually copy it (e.g. take a backup on the old phone, copy that to the new one and restore). Precise steps will depend on what it is that doesn't transfer, so I can't give an all-encompassing recipe. With any luck the problem won't arise, especially as both are Samsung.

For app data, again plan A is that Samsung's transfer app handles that. If not it is possible to back there up to Google (you may already have that turned on) and there's a trick to restore them to a different phone (using the same account).

Keep the old phone until you are sure that everything you care about is transferred.

My experience varies. I did this for my wife's phone, and HTC's transfer app did that almost perfectly. With my Pixel 2 Google's transfer app didn't work at all, so I used a mixture of usb data copies, message backups and the Helium backup app to get everything over (almost - one or two apps wouldn't play ball even so). Samsung to Samsung should hopefully be an easy one.

What apps/stuff is attached to the sim card (can only work when the sim card is in the phone)? I mean in the old phone what items will not work (or disappear) once I take out the sim card from the old phone?

Nothing will disappear. No app is explicitly linked to the SIM card. You won't be able to make calls, receive SMS or use mobile data without an active SIM, and you won't be able to sign in to WhatsApp (which is linked to your phone number), but that's about it (disclosure: I've not used Telegram. But unless that's linked to your phone number it shouldn't be affected).

I'm not sure whether the fact that you won't be able to sign in to WhatsApp without a valid SIM will stop you accessing the app and backing up messages, but to be safe I'd suggest backing up or transferring messages from WhatsApp before you remove the SIM, or indeed before the SIM is disconnected by your carrier (it will also allow you to save a backup to Google Drive, which you can then restore on a new phone, and once you do that it won't matter what happens to the old one). Of course if your new SIM is on the same number you should be able to just put that in your old phone (using a holder, since the Note 8 uses a smaller SIM than the S4, but those are easy to come by) and sign in to WhatsApp again.

However, I would advise transferring SMS quickly. If you have to use a backup + restore to do so, restoring will almost certainly erase any new ones that have come in on the new phone in the meanwhile. Probably true of other message apps, so get them done before you start using the new phone.

Most of the rest are connected to your Google account (or Samsung account perhaps) rather than the phone number, so the SIM won't make any difference to those.

One thing that occurs to me: are all of your contacts linked to your accounts? Most phones do allow you to store unsynced contacts, and some even allow you to use contacts stored on the SIM (a very old and limited way of storing contacts). If you have any of those you'll need to make sure they are copied manually to the new phone.

If you have any SIM contacts you should copy them to the old phone then transfer them (e.g. export them from the contacts app to a vcard file, copy to new phone and import). Your S4's SIM won't fit in a Note 8.
