Gboard add to personal dictionary

Is there a way to get gboard to add words to my personal dictionary direct from the keyboard? Sure it used to do it but not these days.

Type in a word then tap the same word in the auto complete section above the keyboard when you see it.

Yeah that used to work. But now doesn't seem to

Maybe you need to do it a couple of times before it's sure. It does still work on mine.

I tap away but the word doesn't appear in the dictionary. It's gotten to be a real drag recently. Thought maybe there's was a solution. Tried reinstalling gboard but didn't help

Also seems to have lost the ability to autocomplete names from my address book
