About Ringtones

I have a Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro as I have mentioned in other posts. I have loaded in my own ringtones to be used with my contacts as well as notification sounds for messages.

Overall, all ringtones work as they are set to do. Except for one. I have one contact that uses an iPhone (which I would think doesn't matter) and in adding them to my contact list, I set a specific ringtone for them when they call. I also have an overall default ringtone for those who I don't know that call my number.

With this specific contact, I also have a message notification sound set to them as well. That works just fine. But, when they call me it goes to the default ringtone that I have set, not the ringtone set for them. I have tried several others, even some of the ones that come with the phone. When this contact calls, it ALWAYS goes to the ringtone I have set for non-contacts.

I have gone in to make sure the updates are current for the phone. I don't know what else to do.

Has anyone else had this problem? This one contact is the only one that I have had a problem with so far. Anyone know how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Presumably the caller ID is working correctly for this contact (so showing name/picture rather than just number)? And they are making normal voice calls rather than using something like WhatsApp (that would be obvious though)?

I don't see how the iPhone is relevant: as long as it's a normal voice call the device doesn't matter.

Yeah, name, pic everything comes up normally. We tried several times yesterday with different ringtones and same issue. I even deleted the contact out and re-entered it, turned the phone off and back on again once the contact was re-entererd and nothing changed. I don't understand this. Normal voice calls and everything. Very frustrating.

If the number is associated with another contact it could confuse the phone.
I've got a ringtone for my wife. Her work number is listed with her information. I've got her work, as a separate contact, with it's own ringtone. Even with default tones set the phone gets confused, at times, and mixes them up.

Yeah! Redo the contact with different name spelling!! Yeah! Okay, will do that now and post results. The number isn't even close in area code to any other contacts that I have, so I don't think there would be confusion - but can't say for sure either. Don't have all numbers memorized.

Okay - UPDATE.

Deleted contact, turned off phone, restarted. Created new contact. Only one name and only the one phone number, no pic. Nothing more. Saved it, set ringtone. Sent message to call. They did and it was still the same. Only recognizing default ringtone.

Another UPDATE

Also, tried another number there in the immediate area of the one that I am having trouble with. That number as well would not recognize the ringtone.

Is it possible that it is the area number?

My question is even easier (maybe).. how do you set ringtones to specific contacts on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro? I just don't see the option.

Welcome to Android Forums, Greyhair! :)

Are you using Google's default Contacts app? If so, open it, select the person you want, press the 3 dots (upper right corner) on their screen, and you should see a choice to 'Set ringtone.'

"Are you using Google's default Contacts app?".. So there's my first problem. I was using the contact app that came with the phone. It is NOT google contact app... in fact, I am unable to find where that app resides. It's not in my app list, nor can I find any information on who made it.
Thanks to you, I've downloaded Google contact app, and now all I have to figure out Ida how to make it the default app.
Thank you.

Depending on which Android version you're using, your path may be different, but it should be similar to this:

System Settings | Apps & Notifications | Advanced | Default Apps

Hopefully, you'll then see an entry for Contacts (I don't, but I only have one installed), and selecting it should allow you to choose Google's app as the default.
Thank you.
You're welcome. :)
