Help Update operating system?

I have been told by Nationwide Building Society that the reason I cannot access our account on my phone is that my operating system is too old to be supported by them I have looked for updates, by when I try to install, my phone says it's up to date.

Is there any solution, other than purchasing a new phone, which is what's been suggested!

Probably not.

If you have the latest version HTC have built the only chance of getting a newer one is if someone has made an unofficial build (a "custom ROM") based on a newer version of Android. This phone isn't one that will have a lot of developer support, and I don't know what version is needed, so I can't say whether that's possible for this model.

But even if someone has built a suitable ROM for it the problem is that we're talking about "rooting" the phone to do this, and most banking apps try to detect rooted phones and won't run on them (since it is easier for malicious software to access your data if it gets into a rooted device). There are tools to try to hide the root status from apps, but whether these work with that app and that phone I don't know.

Between these two things though I think the chance of success is small. If hacking the phone's operating system is something that appeals to you then feel free to try, but if you just want this to work a new phone will be simpler and much quicker, as well as more likely to work.

Updates are released by HTC and there haven't been any in years for the Desire 510.

You can look through the root threads here and see if there are custom ROMs available with a newer version of Android:

Installing a different version of Android yourself requires putting whats called a custom ROM onto your phone/tablet. The custom ROM has to be made specifically for your device, unfortunately you can't simply download any version of Android.

The two main advantages of rooting a phone are being able to put a custom ROM on the phone and the ability to install apps that require root.

Two downsides - there is a small chance you can brick the phone, and if it's newer you may void the warranty.

The root process is different for every phone, so follow instructions for your specific device. Here is more information about rooting:
