Is there any chance you're still under warranty? I had screen burn-in on my Motorola phone, but it was still under warranty so they shipped me a new one.

If not, @mikedt has provided the answer.

But wasn't yours something that came on quickly? That seems to happen with a small fraction of AMOLED panels, but as the S8 is a 2017 handset it's unlikely (though not impossible) that this is a new phone.

The more normal case is through regular AMOLED ageing, in which case constantly showing the same image, and particularly doing so at high brightness, is what I'd expect to produce this.

Either way, as Mike says this is a hardware issue. LEDs that have been used more heavily have lost their brightness, resulting in a negative image (most visible against a uniform background). There is no fix other than replacing the panel.

Not exactly. I actually had to refresh my memory to be sure; here's what I said at the time: "My Moto Z² Force Edition, which I love, is only ≈6 months old, but for months I've noticed screen burn-in. I kept trying to ignore it, then today decided to call Motorola while its warranty is still good." I'm glad I didn't fart around until its warranty expired!

Some people do buy extended warranties, though.

I'm still baffled by my phone's burn-in. I simply do not leave my devices' screens on when idle. Also, I rarely have brightness at 100%, choosing instead to auto-adjust. So there was never a long period of idle time with the screen on, at any brightness. Oh well, I'm just glad Motorola sent me a new one. It was a first for me, having problems with a Motorola phone, so I didn't know what to expect. It was all good. :)

Or getting a new phone! :D

I guess I may have classified 6 months as rapid, though I've read of people having it after 3. But it does seem to me that there are a subset that are particularly vulnerable, most less so.

I'm currently running a 2 year old AMOLED with no issues. I don't run brightness particularly high or particularly low. I do occasionally check the white balance, because that's what I remember changing with my previous AMOLED phone (the different coloured LEDs age at different rates), but so far it's still fine. I've never suffered burn in with any of my devices, but I've seen it on display models in phone shops (left running constantly at full brightness is asking for trouble).

You know, after rereading my own comment--"is only ≈6 months old, but for months I've noticed screen burn-in"--I've reconsidered my response. Yes, it -did- come on quickly.

At ≈6 months, it had already been [unnamed] months since first noticing it. I don't know now how many months I meant, but if it was 3, that means it started at ≈3 months--and that's pretty fast. And if I meant 5...well, that's REALLY fast! Especially considering what I've stated about its use.

I actually wrote about that phone being a lemon (in the Z² board). It's the first and only phone that's ever given me problems. I consider it a fluke, and it hasn't changed my loyalty to Motorola. Really, it strengthened it--because of how they handled the situation.
