Linux that will embarrass those other OSes

"Meet The Linux Desktop That Will Embarrass Windows 10 And macOS in 2020"

Thought I'd give this its own thread, in case any windows or Mac folks happen by. Let them have a [partial] glimpse of what they're missing by not using Linux on their computers. They're using it on their phones and tablets, though they may not realize it.

I say 'partial glimpse' because this article focuses on its aesthetics, not Linux's superior, more powerful, under the hood stuff, or the freedom that comes with using it. But that's okay! Nothing wrong with admiring something beautiful, in this case, Deepin. The author oozes enthusiasm:

"This is without question the most beautiful desktop environment I’ve ever laid eyes on. I’ve gone from admiring it as an elevated Desktop Linux distribution to downright salivating over it. Every time I revisit the OS, I’m reminded of not just how elegant it is, but that it also boasts that “wow factor” that makes using it feel exciting and not merely a daily necessity."

As for me, the die-hard Kubuntu user? Sure, I'll give it a try! Why not? I've tried many distros--both before and after settling on Kubuntu.

I'd like to change my OS from windows 8.1 to Ubuntu, but so far I've drawn a blank in how to do it. I don't want a virtual drive running Ubuntu, BTW...

I don't know what kind of hoops you may need to jump through now, as it's been a long time since I had to deal with obliterating pre-installed window$ so I could install Linux. (My two most recent laptops came with Linux installed--although I installed mine, Kubuntu, on them almost immediately.)

You might be able to simply boot up off a Kubuntu disc or stick, then proceed to find its 'install' button and go from there. If you run into UEFI or other bullshit issues, my buddies at Kububtu Forums will get you going in no time.

If you want advice on things like partitioning your drive, ask away!

If you want to say goodbye to Windows, it's really easy these days. Just head over to Ubuntu's website and download the iso file for Ubuntu. There are several community versions using different Desktops. My choice is Xubuntu which uses the lightweight XFCE desktop. Burn the iso image to a DVD (or to a usb stick if you don't have a DVD drive. I believe that Ubuntu plays nicely with UEFI and secure boot. It certainly plays nicely with UEFI if secure boot is turned off. That's in UEFI Bios, how you access that veries between motherboard makers. (It's usually F2, F10, DEL, but your PC may be different.). Set the boot option to boot first from DVD or USB as relevant to your PC, and boot from the Ubuntu DVD/USB. This will boot directly into Ubuntu Without touching you hard disk. So you can have a play to see if you like Ubuntu.
Note, you shouls connect to your home network so that if you do install Ubuntu, it can download updates (and thiings like Audio and video codecs) during the install.

If you don't like Ubuntu, then you don't have to install it. You can try other Linux veriosn (called Distributions (or just just 'Distros'). have a look at https://distrowatch.com/ where you can look at their top 100 linux distros (Yes, there are well over 100 altogether, some are specialized, like those intended for the Raspberry Pi). Just don't be scared, there are many here who are willing to help. And Ubuntu has a very friendly forum.

And Ubuntu has a very friendly forum
Years ago, when I was very active there, it had turned into a clique-ish, holier than thou, unwelcoming cesspool. They treated newbies like morons. And the funny thing--in my UNIX-since-1985 book--was that THEY were newbies, too! These were like 1- or 2-year Ubuntu users, self-proclaimed as Linux gods. Their treatment of new users really turned me off. That was...I don't know, maybe 10 years ago. I'm glad to hear it's friendly now.

Good post, though. :) If windows people who use and love Android just made the mental leap, they could be happily humming along in an all-Linux world like I am.

The same author as in the OP explained in another article 5 reasons you should switch from windows to Linux right now. I recommend reading it for anyone sick of windows, or just wanting a better OS.
