WiFi Messaging

Is text messaging over WiFi possible with Motorola G7 Power phones?

My text attempts using WiFi result in either ....

1. message not sent
or
2. Message sent, but it actually isn't. (the recipient says he never got the message)

Text messaging over my network works OK.

What gives here ????

Some phones can natively do MMS over WiFi, others can't. The carrier must also support it, not all do.

Up until recently you could install another texting app that supported MMS over WiFi, but requirements from Google removed that feature for recently updated apps.

One way to enable MMS over WiFi, if your carrier supports it, is to install an older version of Textra - 3.5. This version of the app was made before the new requirements from Google were in effect. You'll have to use the Install From Unknown Sources option.

Textra version 3.5:

In Textra settings under MMS enable Prefer WiFi, you might also have to switch between System and Legacy.

I'm only using SMS now, and trying to understand if/why/when I can do SMS text messaging using a WiFi vs Cell connection. My issue is WiFi vs Cell network for SMS.

I'm using a Moto G7 Power and use Consumer Cellular's Network. C-Cellular works fine for SMS (haven't tried MMS), but WiFi SMS however is unstable at best.

Consumer Cellular says they support WiFi calling on some phones, which means they might also support SMS over WiFi, but I couldn't find a definite answer.

If your phone doesn't support WiFi calling with them I'd guess WiFi SMS also wouldn't work.

I believe it's actually called Generic Access Network(GAN). Which means if your carrier and phone supports WiFi Calling, then you should have SMS/MMS over WiFi service as well.

It's not something I've had experience with myself, as GAN isn't provided in this country(China) AFAiK.
