use app on lock screen without unlocking?

The default apps on the lock screen are Phone and Camera. You can use the Camera without unlocking with a pattern, pin, or password.

If I replace the Phone app on the lock screen with a different app, is there any way to set it up so that the new app will work without having to unlock it first?

I don't want to entirely disable the lock on my phone, so that's not an option I would want to use. I'm hoping there's a way to set it so that the new app will function like the Camera app, requiring no unlocking when opened from the lock screen.

The features are there but tapping the icons dose not lauch the app untill lock screen is disabled witch permuch make it useless. Its a feature provided with my custom rooted rom "close but no dice". Maybe a secondary lock screen is a better way to find what your looking for. After unlocking the system lock.
For me I was looking to launch a simple dialer app without contacts or call history, Dialer only.

I'm looking to do something similar to what you were trying to do with the Dialer. I'm deaf and I use this great transcription app, Google Live Transcribe, all the time. There's no sensitive info in the app, so it would be nice to be able to open it up without having to go through the process of getting past the lock screen every time.

We have alot in common my friend. I have a progress hearing loss in both ears. Im currently bordering severe/profound.
 
As per your request, from my experience as a rooted user of over 5 years and port, flash, moding, custum roms, kernel and ...... Is a plus but Im not an expert. However, I do know that system apps have more privileges than user apps (downloaded). Furthermore, The fact that is also a security lock would make it very unlikely. Mobile devices do differ but they have alot in common in compatibility with Android OS. As I am rooted, I have the availability to modify, change anthing I choose. Make it better or sometimes soft bricking my device.
I know it doesn't seem that it would be a big deal. I know it would be useful and beneficial. Why not give the owner a choice? I'll symply say "thats Google".
I can only suggest a possible work around and your best chance of getting close to what you want would system finger print unlock followed by a user app. I'll check around a bit but dont get your hopes up. Sorry for the late response.

I'm sorry to hear about your hearing loss, it's a big adjustment, as I'm sure you know. Mine went suddenly a few years ago, not gradually like yours - I was a performing musician one day and then the next day I wasn't! I still have some hearing in one of my ears, but the sound is all distorted, so people are pretty much unintelligible unless I'm looking right at them and reading their lips.

You should check out Google Live Transcribe if you haven't already. It's been life changing for me. Also, Otter.ai is a similar thing for laptop/desktop. There's some other great tech too. If phone calls become tricky for you, check out InnoCaption and Sprint TTY.
 
Im also sorry you lost your hearing, So sudden must havebeen overwhelming. Im sorry. Do you wear hearing aids? I knew about Google transcript app when it was in bata. Do any of them work with the phone calls?

I wore hearing aids for about a year, but I didn't really take to them. The hearing I have left is extremely distorted and when I wore the hearing aids it just felt like it was amplifying the distortion. I'm a candidate for cochlear implants, but I've decided not to go that route. How about you? Are you doing either of those?

Live Transcribe doesn't work with phone calls, but InnoCaption is specifically for making phone calls. It's set up like a regular call where you can hear the other person on the end of the line and they can hear you, but there's somebody transcribing what the person on the other end is saying (the transcriptionist is not speaking to anyone, they are just transcribing the other party). It takes a little getting used to because there's always a little delay while you wait for the transcriptionist to type out what is being said, so conversations flow a little differently than a fully hearing conversation.

When I have to call an automated system, I use Sprint TTY. InnoCaption doesn't really cut it for that. By the time the transcriptionist types out the text on an automated system ("for customer service, press 1", etc.), the system has already come to the conclusion that there's no response and it hangs up. The way TTY works is that that the transcriptionist acts as a relay with the other party. The other party doesn't hear you directly - the transcriptionist speaks with them directly and repeats what you've said. Then they type out whatever response is given and it shows up on your screen. It feels less like a phone call and more like a mediated chat.

Both of those services are free for people with hearing loss. There's another app called Captel which is similar to InnoCaption. I've used both and had better results with InnoCaption.

Yes, its a bit scarry to opt for cochlear implant surgey but if you ever decide to then choose a board certified doctor and always get a second opinion.
I was diagnosed Otosclerosis which is a conducive/progressive hearing loss of the middle ear. A sapedectomy was performed on the ear with the most hearing loss(left). It was unsuccessful and I lost hearing as now I had nerve damage. The bone staple was replaced by a metal staple. Im not sure if they performed stapedotomy which is a similar surgical procedure at that time. stapedotomy has a higher success rate. I all depends on the surgeon. (lol). He asked me "do you wnt to do the other one"? OMG. Like NO. So I went to an audiologist and got fitted with hearing aids. So please remember "board certified physician". :)
How was the pinning on the home lock screen? Did it work?
 
Sorry to hear about your surgical experience, I'm sure that was rough to go through. My hearing loss is sensorineural, but it sounds similar in many ways. I hear nothing in my left ear at all. I still hear a reasonable amount with the right ear, but as I mentioned before, it's all distorted, so my word recognition is lousy. I hope with conductive hearing loss, you might not have that distortion effect. I definitely agree about board certified and second opinions. I've probably seen a dozen ENTs and neurotologists across the country at this point!

Pinning is really interesting, thanks! That was a feature I didn't know existed. I wouldn't want to use it all the time because it always opens directly into the app, but it will be great for situations where I know I'll need to be transcribing for a big chunk of time.

There are some very interesting developments in the search for a cure for hearing loss. They're more geared to sensorineural, for the most part. I don't expect anything in the near future, but if you're interested, check out:

Thank you for the information and for you kindness. I guess, I'm kind of used to living with a hearing impediment. Just to lighten things up with a bit of hummer, The audiologists tried suggested a Siemens brand hearing aid and thought, I'm not putting Siemens in my ears. LOL
 
You feedback on pinning the lock screen being limited to just one app was concerning to me. You feedback was and is very important to me. I came to this ost trying to help you and you helped me more :).
Perhaps another app that can be pinned to the lock screen that provides additional apps within a single app will provide access to more then app.

Ha! That's a funny story. It's great that you've kept your sense of humor about it...I try, but I think you're a little more evolved than I am.

You've actually helped me a great deal. I had a few appointments over the past couple of days and I've used the pinning for each of them. It's been excellent.

Third party replacements don’t have the power they once did and you no longer have neat things like lock screen widgets (and, by extension, DashClock Widget and similar apps). The stock lock screen can show you notifications, keep out intruders, and always be on if you need it to. Unfortunately, with the lock screen minimized as much as it has been, that’s about all you can do even with third party replacements these days. We recommend sticking with the stock lock screen if you can because third party options are quickly dropping out of fashion. In addition, with biometric..."
