What is the little headphone like icon on the top right status bar?

Looks like a headset (earphones + mic).

That's what I thought too. Strangely there was no headset connected.

Worried about hackers.

I'd be more worried about a bit of dirt in the headphone socket, or maybe a damaged headphone jack. Either is massively more probable than hackers as a cause for this.
