Would you look at this? [storage issue]

sooo... I was wondering why my phone storage kept running low

the "sdcard" is its own internal, with apps storage and DCIM and such.

The root however, I don't know how it got like that. At most I installed an emulator but did not use it and uninstalled it. Should I root my device? I kinda need those 10 gigs. Files count goes well over 20k.

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to root it? I don't trust Koingo, nor Kingo one-clicks.
 
Out of curiosity, I went back to the site I linked above. One of the first posts about rooting your device was to use Kingroot. I would caution you against rooting with Kingroot. The link below explains what you need to be aware of in regards to Kingroot. My recommendation is to look threw the XDA site above for a different root methode. Good luck

I been a root user for almost 6 years. In that time I learned alot. It is my option the best and safets way to root is SuperSu (Chainfire) or Magisk along with a custom recovery.
 
Unless your phone is rooted, then I don't see how that space could be used unless you have downloaded a bunch of apps.

How much memory did the device come with, and how much of that is used by the system itself?

Here you can see that my device has 16GB available, but 6.16GB are used for the system.
As what I have installed is using up another 7.68GB, my used memory is 13.84GB.

As long as I leave an equivalent amount of space as the RAM of the device (this one is 2GB) I have no issues.

You might try clearing the cache, but any OS past 8.0 makes this tedious.

Cache cleaning apps don't work welk or at all from 6.0 onwards.

But there are still some useful apps that may help you out here.

I use Simple Mobile Tools Gallery Pro (F-Droid) and enable the 'show hidden files' in the settings.
Ads and such (in readable formats) that games and other apps might store are now visable and easily discarded.

Another one I use about once a week (from the pic, you can tell that it is the end of the week) is Android System Cleaner from Systweak.
I use an older, ad-free version (5.0.3.11) that can be found on UpToDown or ApkPure.

It does help me find many things to delete each week, and has other nice features as well.

Phone storage is 16 GB, similar to yours. I'm hoping to recover at least 7 gb from it. X-plore is the only app that showed me the root folder size.

OK, so I manually calculated all the sizes of all the apps installed on my phone, without including system processes. The sum is 6684.8 MB, out of which 2651.8 MB are Google bloatware, so basically installed 4 GB of apps and data.

All my documents, with some xml files sum up to 79 MB, all images to 1.03GB, all movies to 142MB [whatsapp docs, vids and images included], 270MB, 280 MB other stuff , sum up to a little over 8 gigs. welp. Seems like one of my apps forgot to delete 300mb of files, outside of its own folder. One app, of...150 apps. Funny thing is I use them all, quite frequently. FML.

I appologize for being to lazy to look it up, but does your phone provide for an external SD card?

It would be great for you, even though you don't seem to have a ton of personal stuff on your internal memory.

First, that is more than 1GB that can be moved out of the internal memory.

Second, it would allow for easy separation of your personal files.

Since you are on Android 6, I assume that you have a built in storage system setting that allows you to clear the system cache right from the phone storage page (see photo above)?

Just touch the cache area, and a notice saying that you will clear the cache should pop up.

Go ahead and do it, if you haven't already.

That can easily be up to or more than 1GB.

Now, go into your file manager, and look under your normal internal storage at a folder called DCIM.
Insure that 'show hidden files' is active on your file manager.
(Simple Mobile Tools makes an excellent File Manager, btw)

Inside, there should be a file/folder called thumbnails or .thumbnails
( . files are only visable if you have allowed 'show hidden files')

This is where every single thumbnail for each photo, video, avatar, ad, etc. is stored.

I have seen this useless junk file get to over 3GB!

Delete that crap.

Now back out one step to the DCIM folder, and add your own file-

.thumbnails

and save it.

This will prevent more thumbnails from being saved.

Yes, some galleries and video players really need thumbnails, and will start up slow without them.

If that is the case, get a new gallery and a new video player!

Once again, Simple Mobile Tools makes an excellent Gallery (pro version) and X-Player will play virtually any video that you throw at it.

Drawbacks?
Thumbnails allow for the retrieval of photos that have been deleted by accident.

But Simple Gallery Pro has a Recycle Bin, where everything you delete goes before it is permanently deleted.

So, no real drawbacks as far as I can tell.
