Where has my storage gone?

DavidEK

Lurker
I have a Samsung S7with 32gb of storage (it also has a 64gb card). My phone has almost run out of storage. It has just over 500mb free.

Drastic action was needed. I have cleaned out the storage, including all apps that I loaded myself, so that all that is left on it is Android.

But Storage now says I have 3.6gb free. I read that system apps take up about 8gb so that means I have lost, or cannot find about 20gb.

My wife also has a S7 with lots of apps etc etc but she has over 7gb of store free.

I have considered a factory re-set but that sounds a bit too hairly (for me). My other option is to take it to a techi shop in the town.

Before I do that can anyone suggest anything I could do without the factory re-set.

Many thanks.

Use your system Settings' Storage menu to find what is using the space, or maybe an app like DiskUsage.

Once you can see what's using the space we'll be better able to advise, if needed. Though like @Unforgiven I suspect that media may be a big part of it (do you use the video camera? That will eat space rapidly).

Did you reboot it and look gain?

When deleting large amounts of memory, or any other great change for that matter, a restart is a good idea- just to try to make sure that the data you are being shown is up to date and accurate.

Basically I am hoping that your phone is misreporting the amount of memory used.

Another option is that the apps you deleted have left behind a bunch of files.

You can go into your file manager and look inside the Android folder to see if there are leftover things from apps you have unnstalled.
