Help Can't access J3 2017 mobile

Inherited a J3 2017 from my late brother in law but no password or unlock pattern was written down by him. All of his email accounts are now closed (didn't have passwords for them anyway) so I have no clue as to how I may access the device for photos etc that he had of us, his son and himself. Eventually gave up and tried to factory reset device but still require email address for verification to complete even this task. Is there any way to recover use of this device or is it effectively 'bricked' for a new user?

I still want the phone for sentimental reasons but it would be great to use it day to day as a reminder of a lost and much loved friend.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
 
Without the proper credentials I'm afraid there is no way to get into the device
