one person not receiving texts from Textra

wreckanoid

Lurker
I have spent hours on this and it's driving me nuts.
I have a Samsung S9 and have been using Textra on previous phones and on this one for many years without issue.
. A couple of weeks ago, for no obvious reason, I cannot send texts to one particular person. This person DOES receive images from me, just not texts.
This person DOES receive texts from me if I use the Samsung Messages app.
I have tried everything I can find on the web, including deleting Textra and re-installing it, deleting this person from my Contacts and re-creating them - all to no avail.
I have checked their phone (iPhone 8) and I am NOT in their block-list.
I have spent hours on this and it's driving me nuts.
If anybody has any useful input I'd be grateful.
We are both in Australia and I am using AmaySIM and she is with Optus (so both Optus).

So they are receiving MMS but not SMS (pictures but not texts). The question is, what the "Samsung Messages" doing? SMS are SMS regardless, and the SMS app is just an interface, the service behind it is the same whatever app sends the SMS. Hence if messages work from the Samsung app but not from Textra the obvious suspicion is that the Samsung app is using a different protocol for this person. Not having a Samsung I don't know what options that app has, but I can't help wonder whether it's somehow sending its messages as MMS (maybe as a fallback to RCS "Chat", which Textra doesn't support but I think Samsung's app does)? You could however try another third party SMS app: if it also doesn't work from a different app that will increase the suspicion that the problem is with SMS rather than Textra and that the Samsung app is doing something unusual. But I'm afraid all of this is pure speculation.

Are there any other reports of such problems with iPhone users? It would not be unfair to say that Apple's message app has a chequered history as far as messages from non-Apple devices goes, so I wonder whether the iPhone might have received an update shortly before this started which could have messed something up? But again, that's just speculation.

Just to cover all bases, it might also be a carrier problem. I don't know whether they can see what's going on, but it might be work asking them.

Thank-you for your suggestions. What you say makes sense. I'll try the "sending its messages as MMS (maybe as a fallback to RCS "Chat"," setting (if I can find it).
I have tried it with iMessage enabled AND disabled on the iphone - no difference. Maybe I'll try another messaging app also if I have no luck.
I'll let you know if anything works...

Beginning this year, and not announced yet, is the deal Google made with Samsung to use its messaging app only as the stock app. I have the same problem and have the engineers at T-Mobil looking into it. Google has changed messaging services to reside in Messages app to kill the competition, where they will not be able to do RCS messages until a fix is proposed or done. Thanks for your post. I was going nuts, too. Seems Google is taking a hostile takeover of messaging in the US. What this means is that RCS messages will only work in Googles messaging app. That means antitrust suit.

I started having a similar issue with a Samsung S9, and now on an A54. My wife uses an iPhone and we send and receive texts regularly with me using Textra.
My wife's brother in Adelaide does not receive my texts. He has an iPhone and I'm using Textra. Now I find that another friend of mine who also has an iPhone no longer receives my texts. I'm sick of having to switch to 'Messages' or 'Pulse' just to exchange texts. Textra always worked flawlessly for me up until about 2 years ago.

It's Apple's fault I think, something in their iMessage. Seems to be many are now howling about it. Not a problem where I am as iPhone users here don't use iMessage

Apple are notorious for proprietary lock-in.

SMS is SMS, and it really shouldn't matter what app you use to send an SMS because it's the same system service that does the actual sending no matter which app you use. Which makes it very odd if they receive messages from one app and not another. Have you checked the settings of the apps, e.g. is one sending MMS and another SMS? Since only 2 apps (Google's and Samsung's "Messages" apps) can send RCS (which iPhones can't receive) SMS vs MMS is the only difference I can really think of.

Of course both are standard things, so if anyone can receive them it seems most likely that the problem is actually with the person or people who cannot. But that could be their app, their handset, their provider or the interconnection between their provider and yours.
