Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), the first Pope from Latin America (though he was the son of Italian immigrants) has died at 88 after a year or more of troubled health issues. No specific cause of death was announced.

RIP, with condolences.

I'm not a Catholic but I feel a deep loss at the death of the Pope.
Rumors, and speculation, have been around since he was proclaimed Pope that he was the last Pope in a midevil prophecy.

I had not heard of that particular prediction, which is not really that surprising since there are so many of them. What is odd to me is that time and time again people continue to predict the end of the world even though none of the past predictions has come true. (Maybe they didn't study history and that's why they are repeating it?) ;)

In the past I've always kind of thought that predictions about the end of the world were rather tied to Christianity, so only two thousand-ish years old. But even the Assyrians made such predictions and that was almost three thousand years before Christ.

As a Christian, I personally think things have to get much, much worse before God is going to wrap it all up, but I have nothing to base that on other than opinion.

Still, I do like good fiction, which is why I have many times enjoyed this Clarke short story since I first read it ca. 1977: The Nine Billion Names of God. (That link will download a copy of it in PDF, and I highly commend it to everyone.)

The Catholic Church has a lot of problems they try and cover up. As a Catholic myself I wish they would make some changes, like for one allowing priests to get married. The church says, no because you're married to the church. Last time I checked priests are human beings and have the same urges we all do. Allowing priests to marry would not eliminate the problem of young boys being sexually molested, but would surely cut down on the number of cases.
