Samsung Galaxy Keeps Rotating Screen To Landscape

Samsung Galaxy J2 phone now rotates the screen to landscape whenever I just turn slightly my hand. This started recently and did not do this in the past. Settings -> Home Screen -> Rotate to Landscape Mode is OFF. Anyone know how to stop this?

Does it happen when running particular app, or all apps? I have met apps that ignore or override auto-rotate settings when running.

If it's just the home screen (i.e. launcher) maybe a different launcher would help? I do not use the One UI launcher so can't really say much about that.

(I assume you've tried the usual reboot phone or clear app cache types of solutions).

Yes I've rebooted numerous times. It seems to happen with whatever I'm displaying - e.g. Settings, Contacts, Phone, Firefox. But does not happen on Home Screen. Once it rotates it does not quickly go back to normal display when I turn my hand. Most times I have to literally shake the phone a few times until it goes back to normal.

Anyone have a suggestion about what's causing this? Is the phone just broken and I need to get a new one.

It doesn't happen on the home screen because that is always fixed in portrait mode. I don't think any phones have landscape for home screen.

Given the age of the phone it's very possible that it's a hardware fault and the accelerometer has failed. If that is the case there is no practical fix as it would need a new mainboard, even if parts are available the cost would well exceed the value of the phone (and it's still a 10+ year old discontinued device).

So, best to take the opportunity to upgrade to something newer and better.

Thanks Fox Mulder. That's about the conclusion I've come to. I'll be looking at a new phone. But after what google is doing to block F-Droid apps - I've already got the warning on one of them that it will stop working - I'm considering switching to Iphone as the Android open system advantage is gone.

Well that's certainly your decision to make.
But they have backed off somewhat from completely blocking sideloading, it will still be possible but you'll have to jump through some extra hoops.

Possible - but not the hoops that people, or at least me, are willing to have to bother going through. Including a 24-hour wait for anything to be 'unlocked'.

Samsung OneUI has been able to do home screen landscape for quite a long time, I was a Samsung user for a long time (recently switched to Pixel 10 Pro) and remember the screens would reorient continually when I'd turn the phone. I found it useful for me as I have a car mount on my dashboard that holds the phone landscape while I'm driving, but I can see how it can be frustrating for startac4 if he's not interested in that feature.

This can be defeated by changing rotation setting to OFF, so it won't flip the orientation at all whatsoever; that might be a bit inconvenient if you have apps which work better in landscape aspect, but that's the way to stop it continually flipping.

Thank you cwcheese. That auto-rotate setting is hidden under two layers. Finally found clear and correct directions on how to find it and turned it off by changing it to "portrait". Looks like it's working now but I'll wait a day or two before conclusively noting this as "solved"
