Previously could you enter download mode using the 3 button combo? It's volume down + Home + Power if you have forgotten. Once the I9000 screen show up on the screen, wait for 2 seconds then let go of the home button, then another 1 second and let go of the power button. (The timings don't have to be perfect. But if you hold the buttons down for too long sometimes the phone will restart itself again.)
