QuickPic does just fine reading anything on the sd card.
But you can't delete pictures in the stock Gallery folder and there's nothing that the QuickPic devs can do about that.

In KitKat, storage is protected so that only apps that own folders can delete or write files in them. That was added as a security feature.
You can essentially turn it off by rooting and applying a simple mod.

For use in a cell phone, they're pretty much equivalent - provided that the UHS-1 isn't strictly UHS-1 and decides to not work. I haven't experienced that personally but it's been known to happen.
