I need to know what's better an ICS stock ROM or a custom one ? and what is the best ICS custom ROM ?

I flashed a stock ICS 4.0.3 on my phone it's running great but when i tried to root it using flashing a zip file from recovery mode it says E: failed to mount /SDcard" how can i solve this proplem.
