I do not get message notifications or sound when a message come in.....I only notice it if I go to the notification area....which may be some time after the message has been sent. I am missing important text messages...Any ideas please

I do not have any sound when a text comes through or anything on screen to tell me that there is a message...I have to go to notification bar to check all the time.... As far as I am aware the sound is turned on...any ideas please ?
