160-character SMS limit

Lurker
I just got the HTC Droid Eris from Verizon. I switched over from AT&T because their service was so horrible, and overall I am very satisfied - except for one pretty major issue. I am aware that SMS messages are, by definition, limited to 160 characters - I get that, fine. Realistically, though, there are a lot of of times when text messages need to go over that length (and when calling the person instead is not an option). I also have no problem with being charged for additional messages when I go over the character limit. The issue is this: anytime I send a text longer than 160 characters to a non-Verizon subscriber (which a good number of my contacts are), they only get the first 160 characters of that message - not multiple shorter messages, but only 160 characters and then everything else gets deleted and they never see it. This is pretty huge, considering that AT&T and every other phone carrier I have ever been with automatically segments longer messages as needed regardless of what service the receiver has. Having to keep count of my characters or convert to MMS every time I don't want a chunk of my message to simply disappear into thin air is plain ridiculous, especially when this is obviously a non-issue for others. Is there an Android app that will do what Verizon for some strange reason cannot, and divide up long texts into 160-character pieces to be sent as separate message so that the whole message will actually go through regardless of the receiver's cell phone provider?

Thanks!

I have the same issue. In fact, I sent a long text message and it said it was being converted to MMS but the recepient never received the message. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the exact same boat. Switched to the Droid on Verizon from an iPhone on ATT and started getting the 160 character limit msg's. Took me a couple to figure out what was going on, lol. Anyway, only thing I have found so far is an sms app called Handcent that keeps a count of how many characters you've used and has a setting you can turn on to allow texts over 160 to be chopped up into multiple txts when sent. It's not a bad little program. Don't let the iPhone skin/theme it installs with fool you, you can change it if need be. I am just hoping they update the software/firmware at some point to address this issue. I've never experienced this on other carriers before.

I called Verizon. They tried to give me a song and dance about how it wasn't their fault but the fault of whatever system receives the message to send it to the recepient. Total bull. At the end of the day it is a Verizon issue and apparently it has been this way forever. Thanks for the tip on Handcent. I actually downloaded it last week but didn't like the skin so I uninstalled it. I'll try it again now that I know it will break the messages. That should solve the problem. Thanks again!

A recent version of HandcentSMS added an option called "Split 160" that will fix this issue for you. Also if you didn't like the style then take a look at the settings, there are many ways you can customize it. Even per-contact if you wish.
