With the update to 2.1 later this year will the Xperia X10 be able to do multi touch? or will it never be able to do multi touch, im not a tech wis but I assume multi touch is a hardware thing and not a software thing.

Nope it won't have multi touch, due to the hardware not because of the OS.

Correctly stated. The x10 dose not have the proper sensors to allow for multi touch. There are extensive reads on this in the XDA-Developers forums if you are in need of details beyond a "no chance"
