Help 2 machines with 1 remote

The busted DVD player is a Sony (supposed to be CDs too), and the working Bluray is LG. Does anybody on here know how to troubleshoot a DVD player? The drawer stays shut until I shut off the TV (Vizio), not the player itself, and then I can
finally take out the disc. The screen claims loading but it doesn't, and there's a sort of grinding sound, not very loud. If I can fix it myself, I will.
