3 Mobile UK - Sim Only

I was just about to ask this..... I notice there is no Skype software for the Nexus 1 yet..... anyone have any experience of using 3 with the N1?

I have heard the bad stories about 3 and unlocked phones as well.

I also remember seeing a thread about a guy who had bought about 3 Heros' for family members & couldn't get any decent network coverage. Think he was trying to cancel in the end. Try to find the threads by doing a search.....

I have 3uk sim only on my nexus. But, I didn't want to bother with a contract (even tho' it's only 30 days notice to cancel) until I'd experienced the coverage so I have a "free" (cost me

I'm using Orange with my N1 but used a 3 sim in an unlocked iPhone for over a year... no troubles at all.

If you search the market for Skype there's a 'Skype for 3' app IIRC. I doubt it'll work well, VOIP over 3G is painful in my experience (i've tried it on many handsets and networks).

- mostly been at home; no 3g atm

Oh, my-oh-my...:D:D this phone is so clever ..... what it's been doing is switching away from 3g when it detects a wi-fi signal. As soon as I toggle off the wi-fi (widgit on home screen) the 3G signal comes back..... duh,:o

Do you have no signal on the phone at all when it detects wi-fi? it's great if the phone automatically uses the wi-fi but if there's no signal to receive a phone call, I'm not so sure!
Sorry I've not ordered mine yet.. Just curious!

Yep, seems to be the case. I've just returned from walking the dog during which, every time I checked, I had 3G. Am now at home with wifi and, like before, as the wifi symbol appears at the top of the screen the 3G symbol disappears and the nexus defaults to ?2g? - I'm not sure what exactly - it's still showing 3 as the network and I can make telephone calls, receive messages etc.

Hmmmm.... I may have it all wrong about the 3G/wifi issue. Now I'm wondering whether it could just be that the status bar only has space for one or other of the symbols? Page 48 of the Nexusone-userguide suggests that there will be a max of 3 status icons showing.:(

Yeah... the guy in the shop wanted to sell me a sim-only rolling monthly deal but I headed him off.
I can confirm that my PAYG sim works with no problems. I bought

I've been pleased to find this discussion but note that it stopped early February 2010.

Is everyone who bought a Nexus and using 3 mobile

Still happy with mine, only occasional coverage issues (walking in the langdales there wasn't any on the tops but then I wouldn't expect that).
I'm not on contract - have sim only and I top up

Thank you very much for that. It's very helpful.

Was actually on the phone to 3 as you wrote and the sales advisor said I could take out the

I got 3 because (having tried all the networks with PAYG 1st..) where I spend [wife's house in Ascot] most time, a notorious mobile bad-spot, 3 was the best for 3G speed & signal strength... Other fine network providers in other locations will give different results...

As to speed I get about 1Mb at home (Ascot), have seen 3.9Gb (Waitrose car park, Wokingham..) but coverage is patchy..

IMHO all network providers lie & mislead about speed, coverage & the quality & ability of their support staff... I could of course be mistaken: Feel free to quote me..

I've decided not to buy either the Nexus1 nor (tch) iPhone at present.

I looked at the specs and potential apps and thought, you know, I can do that on my iPod Touch with my mifi - IF I get a signal - plus I weigh myself down with decent cameras.

I'm not really into cameraphones. And if I do need a satnav, which is hardly at all, I still have my TomTom.

I have a perfectly acceptable Nokia for making calls/texts, and, if I need it, net access. Age means it's sometimes difficult to make out what's on a tiny screen, and arthritic fingers find it difficult to negotiate phone keyboards.

I'm probably longer in the tooth than The Artfullodger and co.

I'm not convinced that I REALLY need the gadget.

As for network coverage, it is an issue. Some places near Loughborough, Middle England, have blind spots for all networks, and I have a friend who couldn't even get VF coverage in her home in Nottingham.

Now, if WIMAX became a reality and someone manufactured an interactive tablet which enabled multimedia input...

Thanks to all who replied.

Technology will ALWAYS get better/faster/cheaper... and whatever you buy today, in 6 months time they'll always be a better/faster/cheaper one...

Hey! Good luck whatever you do...

Cheers!

No, the coverage is good enough - it is that phone auto switches to wifi when it can so there is no need to use 3G and hence no icon.

Tried downloading the Skype software to my N1 with no luck. Then tried on my Nexus S, and again no luck. So I went in and asked a sales rep for 3 and they said the unlimited Skype app was only download-able on mobiles sold through 3. Other than the Skype, I had no problems. Hope this answers your question.
