3G Connection Notification With a Check Symbol?

For some reason today, there was check symbol beneath the 3G icon and I had no internet connection during this. Does anyone know what the check symbol means?

I had to take out the battery and let the phone reboot and now I see the correct up/down arrows under the 3G icon.
