i have an lg venice and my 3g isn't working, why??

You don't mention what carrier you use, but it could be a couple of things:
If you just activated the phone, it can take a day or two for the phone to settle into the network. Make sure you do any updates, as some of those help the phone communicate with the towers.
Also, make sure you have mobile data turned on in settings. (Open settings and Mobile data should be close to the wifi settings.)
If data is on and it has been more than a couple of days, check to see if it is on in some areas and not on in others--like not on when you are at home, but on when you are downtown. If that is the case, it is just not working when you are too far away from your carrier's signal. Not much you can do about that, except wait for the carrier to increase coverage and use wifi in the meantime.
If you are not getting a signal anywhere, call your carrier and have them reset the data connection on your phone. I had to do that once, and it worked.
