Hi

i have brought galaxy y phone from india and 3g is not working in t mobile in usa. I asked the t mobile customer support and they are saying since there is a frequency difference between india and usa 3g will not work for mobiles brought from india. Is it true? If that is true, whether we can modify/repair the phone

Yes, I'm afraid this is true. An Indian model Galaxy Y will only do 3G in the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, neither of which is used for 3G in North America.

In fact you need to be particularly careful with T-Mobile, as their 3G in most places is split between 2 different frequency bands (one for uplink from phone to basestation, one for downlink the other way). This is a very unusual system (I can't offhand think of any other network in the world that uses it), so it's even more important to check compatibility in this case.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do here. This isn't something you can change with a firmware update; you'd certainly need a new motherboard, and probably a new 3G antenna in order to get good reception, at which point it probably cheaper and certainly easier to buy a new phone.

Sorry :(
