3rd party SMS/Hangouts app?

Are there any? I'd stick with Hangouts but its MMS is flaky (can't seem to download them on wifi) I would just go back to the stock app but there are a few contacts I can only chat with using Hangouts. I'm using a rooted ZTE Force if that helps.

Then make a different app your default for SMS/MMS and only use Hangouts for chat. Means you have 2 inboxes, but if it also means your MMS are reliable then that's an improvement.
