4.2 on Nexus 7?

Hi,

New forum member and Nexus 7 owner here. I just purchased a N7 32gb yesterday from Staples and thought it would have 4.2 pre-installed. I did find an update this morning and applied it but it looks to only be 4.1.2.

Am I missing something? Sorry if this question has been asked already. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

From what I've read, 4.2 won't be rolled out til mid-November at earliest since that's when devices that come with it (Nexus 4, Nexus 10, new Nexus 7's) will begin to ship out

It will be on the Nexus 10, but I'm not worried. Nexus 7 owners will be amongst the first to get any eligible updates (including 4.2). There are still tablets owners running on 4.0 (and 2.3 if you can believe it).

Most of the devs will be upgrading roms with 4.2 source so there won't be many rom updates for awhile, so I decided I'd like to play with stock 4.2 during that time.

I restored my stock 4.1 nandroid (everybody has one of those, right? :D), installed rootkeeper and took two OTA's, then restored root with rootkeeper, reflashed TWRP from Goo Manager and installed any missing apps with Titanium Backup.

I'm ready for 4.2 when it comes. :D

Indeed, and to show you how lucky we are with these Google Experience devices, I have been getting wonderful regularly updates with my old Xoom wifi. Just got the 32gb 7 yesterday and I'm pretty psyched for the smaller screen size. I think most here know that we'll get very timely updates for OS from Google....unlike my Galaxy Nexus LTE. Hrmpf.

4.2 would be release along with the Nexus 4 and 10, I am sure some leaks will happen soon if you are into installing custom ROMs.

Got my 32gb Nexus 7 last week. I updated to 4.1.2 then unlocked/rooted. What do I need to do to make sure I can take a 4.2 OTA update and not lose root, whether it be via rootkeeper or another method?

If you're using SuperSU, (rather than superuser) for root, you can go into settings->survival mode (checked) and it will maintain root for OTA upgrades. Just remember, you need stock recovery to get the OTA's, you can't be using CWM or TWRP recoveries if you want OTA. You can flash the stock back if you need, then reflash your custom recovery after the OTA, or you will need to flash the update once someone has posted it. If you download and flash the 4.2 update with CWM or TWRP, you need to make sure you haven't used root to uninstall/disable any of the "system apps" that come loaded already. If so, flash gapps first to get them all back, upgrade and remove them again if not needed, or you will need to edit the update script in the zipped 4.2 flash update so it will not check for them.

Good advice if you just must have OTA's. I haven't bothered with them for quite a while now. If I did I would just wait till it was posted and flash in TWRP or CWM.
Survival mode of SuperSU is only in the paid Pro version. I don't think I will need rootkeepers Since I plan to stay with custom roms anyway, I'll just wait until they incorporate the updates, which usually is pretty quick once the update drops. As soon as N10 drops it will be out in custom roms. Some of the features already are.

Yeah, on my 16GB I'll download the update when available and flash it. I just received my 32GB N7 yesterday via UPS, have rooted it, but left the stock recovery because I want to wait a few days for the OTA. Have downloaded some of my apps (Titanium backup and AndroZip) so I can get all my apps and data back quickly when I'm ready.

I'll add the custom Recovery after that. I've always used CWM because I had some problems with TWRP in the past, the 6.0.15 is pretty good and let's you choose whether you want nandroid backups in blob or backwardly compatible tar format, so it's pretty sweet. But since my 32GB is brand new, I may try TWRP again, I know it's been updated since I last tried it and many people are pretty high on it.

I'll see where it goes.
