4.4.4 Factory Image released, OTA inbound

Its more likely to be towelroot. (Maybe both though?)

Googles view is you should need to have a computer to root. One click root apps on the device are a huge vulnerability

It could be. The build number didn't increase much: 84M to 84P. The OTA will likely only be 10MB or so.

Another very very small possibility - removal of dalvik for art.

They just made the change for that in aosp public today.

Its more likely well see that in the next version - but its a small chance

While a possibility, I think ART is going to be unveiled at Google IO and then roll it out when the next wave of devices.

 Another name I need to follow it appears

My download just completed, but I'm still at the hotel without a computer. Im gonna have to do some searching to find one I can fastboot flash the radio from

I just sideloaded the ota, and it didn't do really extensive checks. I have Xposed and Faux kernel installed and it still installed without an issue. Flashed it, reflashed root with a cache and dalvik wipe and it was good to go.

Don't get me wrong, I love Google, but 4 updates on Kitkat to make it run right is just plain embarrassing.

Ice Cream Sandwich had 4 while Gingerbread had 7 revisions :p.

But in all seriousness, software bugs can never be fully eradicated. That's the basic principle in the Law of Conservation of Bugs that is taught in computer science classes. It gets even more complicated when you're trying to bug fix while adding new features at the same time. This is evident given how often great app developers update their apps. An even worse example of a lot of updates is Microsoft releasing Windows updates. If you install Windows 7 with no add-ons to a system and then let Windows apply all the fixes and patches, you'll end up with close to 150 minimum. Granted this is all from over the span of 5 years which equates to 30 a year minimum. Suddenly 4 doesn't sound so horrible. :)

4.4.3 to 4.4.4 fixes new SSL security vulnerabilities that were recently discovered.

Google had nothing to do with them, they're just patching the issue.

Can you get annoyed at them for making your device more secure? :dontknow:

I'm not hating Google. I've got more bugs now then 4.4. Bad battery drain, Google Earth and boa opening when backing out of Internet, Bluetooth doesn't auto connect in my car anymore, etc.

You'd think a bunch of engineers making 9 versions of Android could get it right by now.

Imagine going to tgi Fridays and it takes them 4 attempts to get your dinner right. Same thing in my opinion.

If you want to go back to 4.4.0, google gives you the tools to do that.

You won't see many other companies allowing such a thing.
