Help 4G sim in 3G phone and unlocking issues

Firstly, my apologies if this in the wrong forum. Ok, here is my issue I would appreciate help with.

I have a samsung S 4 which is away for repair for a week. I have two other Android phones, A HTC sensation which is open. I put my EE sim in it and it works for calls and texts but not data. I have made sure that data is on and as the phone was originally bought in Holland I made sure connect to Data Roaming was activated.
Is it possible that the the HTC phone doesn't recognise a 4 G sim for data purposes?
My Second phone is a Motorola Atrix which was originally locked to Orange. Now it won't recognise the EE sim and is asking for a SIM unlock code. I have googled and it would seem that EE cards are not compatible with Orange phones, seems daft but that would appear the case. Could anyone tell me a free reliable way to unlock it? All youtube videos are just adverts for paid services.

For the first issue are putting in the correct APN settings? APN is needed for data to work. Data roaming does not need to be set because doesn't EE have coverage in your area? As for the second issue I am not sure about the unlocking laws in your region. Here in the U.S the carrier can do it for you or you can buy unlock codes from a third party.

Check out eBay for unlock codes, you can normally get them for 2-3 quid. I've unlocked a few Orange handsets that way.

It's not free like you're after, but it's cheaper than what the networks will charge you. :)
