4G spotted in Las Cruces, NM...sort of

I was sitting at my desk today and happened to glance down at my phone only to see the 4G indicator activated on my phone! Sure enough a speed test confirmed 4G speeds. Here's the catch...I work in the University area and it's only live there. Once you're about 3-4 miles away, it's back to 3G. I'm guessing this is part of VZW's testing phase. I fully expect it to go away completely before they officially launch 4g here but I take it as a sign that it's not too far out.

UPDATE: 4G was up and running until Wednesday. Service would range from great 4G to 1X all while sitting at my desk. Again, I'm assuming this is part of the testing process.

Does anyone have similar experiences where 4G was initially tested in a very small area? I'm curious what this means to the actual roll-out date.

PS - I won't be offended if no one knows where the hell Las Cruces, NM is located! :D

I just got 4g on August 18th, did not see 4g once before the announced turn on date; and I am always looking at my phone so if it was on for any decent amount of time I would have seen it.

I would guess it bodes well that you will get it officially in the next few months.

Or maybe they just using Las Cruces as a test site for better things. It is Las Cruces after all. :P

Another possibility, unlikely but still worth considering, is that NMSU is in the process of implementing a Wireless DAS system on campus. Lots of universities are looking into wireless DAS to insure better coverage inside their buildings. The best part of wireless DAS is that the carriers typically pick up part of the tab...

And yea I know where Las Cruces is... got a good friend who's lived in Alamo for years. Well that and I used to work at one of WSMR's peer proving grounds.

Update: As announced on the VZW site, 4G launched in LC on the 15th. My speed tests have been between 12 Mb/s and 22 Mb/s.

I guess for some reason, VZW turned it early for a few days to test it out.

:D
